what does bunkerchan think of the Freespace series, meaning descent freespace 1 & 2 plus the expansion silent threat for the original.Freespace 2, and its open source version remains to this day the crowning achievement of the "Space Sim" genre which it has never really topped, despite having come out over 20 years agothe storyline is essentially a less personalized version of mass effect, or more accurately mass effect is ripping off descent freespace since it came out like 10 years later. Dead space also has similar lovecraftian themes

Used to have a demo CD with a demo of Freespace 1 when I was 8. Really loved the game, but as an adult I never bothered getting it again. I've only heard good things about Freespace 2, so I might download both games one of these days.

Played Freespace and Freespace 2 when I was a kid. Blew my mind at the time because it made space feel big and had a kinda "Newtonian" thing going for it, which was fairly unique for a space shooter since the X-Wing and TIE Fighter games still felt like flying airplanes. I should take a trip down memory lane sometime and try out some of these open-source fan spinoffs.

Anyone else like those 90s space combat simulators? Descent: Freespace and Freespace 2 were fun, and if someone has/makes a Trek themed one would be cool too. Both those games had a great storytelling and fun gameplay (vid related).

Wing commander is more star wars than trek. Freelancer is great but needs a lot of modding to fix all it's issues due to being cobbled together and rushed out the door after the main develper self destructed. Starlancer was okay, having shipped on time and budget, which is more that Freelancer can say. The X series is polarizing, people either love them or hate them for how the fun space sim aspects tend to turn into a trade empire building game halfway through.

As for more modern space games, you might enjoy Rebel Galaxy, the Startpoint Gemni series, or Evochron Legacy. The Escape Velocity series is a great 2D version of Elite or Freelancer. There's also a decent open-source clone called Naev.

I know that we'll never get this, as even if it would sell it would be about 5 games worth of content, but it's a nice idea. I just want to spend a few weekends optimising the horrific looking Frankenship (that started life as an Neptune class survey ship that was jury rigged for combat, and is now buried under a sea of EPS conduits and home-brew wiring and is now rated for Warp 9.8, because the idea makes me laugh) I've cobbled together from parts taken from all 4 quadrants and crewed by a collection of psychotic turbo autist officers who've been put through the kind of hell that would break The Chief.

I had a 'First Campaign Only' version of the game as a kid on an original Volition CD - probably still got that somewhere. It was fun, and the concept was neat.

However if you look at the game's development goal you can easily see they screwed it up. The idea was to put you in as 'one more pilot'. Instead, these games make it so Alpha One has to help the team win by personally doing every single key objective, making sure everyone else does not die in the process, and also tying up the team's shoelaces so they do not trip while in their ship cockpits.

Freespace 1 and 2 are insanely good. The Descent games were awesome too. I swear games at the end of the 90's were much more ambitious. I guess there's DCS today but you need a fancy HoTaS and its not in space.

I think it's a really good game about managing a small community of individuals with different skills, needs and personalities.

Pretty barren but it is a really good platform for modding with lots of open space for turning the game into whatever you want, from making a colony of raiders moving across the planet and razing settlements to exploring the stars in your handmade spaceship and fighting the mechanoid hoards.

Warfare in RimWorld is fucking terrifying because every warrior is a guy you have spent hours with, you understand their importance, you know of their relationships, you understand their personalities and if they die there's a true sense or loss there.

Vanilla is pretty barren, but there are excellent mods for this.

The only good thing about Stellaris is that it conforms to the leftist worldview (ironically, porky Collectivism equals Authoritarianism versus Individualism equals Freedom equals Entrepreneurship was overtime changed to Freedom equals Egalitarianism and Communism, Private business equals oligarchy)

The game, however, was broken by later patches. It's overcomplicated and requires tedious routine, but also doesn't have any variance at all. It's perfectly balanced, but due to being overcomplicated and drawnout doesn't work out for multiplayer. Like every other 4x strategy game, it seems to think that throwing a billion different menus and mechanics at players is an acceptable substitute for actual fun. Even if I don't mind it breaking the KISS principle, the issue is it doesn't get anything from it. The reason for their design is to try and make it a "real sim of a sci-fi galaxy". It awfully bungles it, as none of the systems are actually in any way deep. Its just a bunch of puddles that haphazardly get dug with each DLC.
For instance:

It would be cool to have each empire be ideologically or culturally different…
But in practice this is done by barely noticable gameplay wise (unless they are op) traits that have no effect on the procedural "story".
It would be cool to have politics of your empire…
But in practice its just a tab that you farm influance from that has no narative response to your actions.
It would be cool to have space trade…
But its just a simple pact with a flat income boost and a non-specific value resource that maybe atracts pirates if you are stupid and can't play the game right.
It would be cool to have your empire evolve over time…
But all the outcomes in the civics are predecided, you just choose when to unlock them.
It would be cool to explore the Galaxy…
But there is zero randomly generated expedition sites, so you will see the same shit each game.
It would be cool to develop a ton of differing weapon builds…
But there isn't much reason to not just go down one weapon type path and just use that.
It would be cool to have alliance pacts and federations…
But they are all the same sterile shit.
The Khan sounds cool,
But croaks way too soon to his assassin sex slave gf, so he only ends up a threat for like a quarter of the Galaxy
The War in Heaven is cool,
But the rest of the game past midgame bores me so much that I literally never seen it.
Galactic market sounds cool,
But it's fucking sterile and carries zero weight for the actual gameplay, as its just a seperate tab where you can buy or sell limitless amounts of goods. Traderoutes? Piracy? Smuggling? Nah, fuck that shit, no need.
The L sector or whatever its called is a cool idea,
But it's just three prescripted outcomes of what is inside.
Curators are a cool idea,
But they are just a guaranteed thing that will be a part of all your games and there is no real point to them outside of "dump credits to gain x modifier".

The only system that is any good IMO was the UN, but even that has a lot of unexplored ground that, lets be honest, will never be touched by the devs.

The game is just one big graveyard of good ideas that all look like unfinished Revell plastic model kits. The only saving grace is the modding scene.

But even with mods it doesn't fix another huge issue - combat is extremely fucking unfun. After playing starsector recently it is beyond me how a proper gaming company couldn't have done proper space battles and instead kept up with their usual shitty stats vs stats nonsense.

To be honest I noted that the Stellaris and Rimworld threads were basically dying since the topic is too specific to stay alive, so I proposed making a single Space simulator thread for smaller games that aren't relative big shots like Outer Worlds. I compiled the best posts, edited them a little and added my own two cents (or old posts).

Your idea holds quite some merit however
