I think Mussolini understood the true nature of leninism from the perspective of left communist criticism of it being 'state capitalism' or 'red fascism' so for him it wasn't a betrayal, at least not in practice if in ideology.

Mussolini was a card carrying member of the Italian Socialist Party and a follower of Georges Sorel. But after WW1 capitalism was improving working class conditions so quickly that class warfare and proletarian revolution was never going to happen in the West. Sorel responded with a new thesis which proposed that socialists and communists should stop fighting against nationalism and instead embrace it as a tool for building a perfect socialist society. That's when Mussolini quit the Socialist Party and helped build the Fascist Party.

It's actually hard to argue that fascism had anything to do with race since Mussolini annexed Ethiopia and absorbed the black population as full Italian citizens. Which pissed off Hitler to no end since Nazism actually was about race.
