About 60 thousand signatures were collected at the factories demanding the most severe punishment for criminals[5]. The trial began on December 16. The hooligans were accused of banditry and undermining the "foundations of the Soviet legal order" under Article 76 of the Criminal Code of the RSFSR (organization or participation in gangs, armed gangs and robberies organized by gangs, robberies and raids on Soviet and private institutions and individual citizens). Seven participants received death sentences (two of them were pardoned). The remaining 19 criminals were exiled to the Solovetsky camp. The brother of the accused turned out to be a Komsomol organizer of a large Leningrad plant, who was later convicted of giving false evidence in defense of his relative. During the trial, the judges and witnesses received threats, which further inflamed the atmosphere around the trial. "Chubarovshchina" has become a household term for gang rape out of hooligan motives[6]. In the press, the Chubarovskoye case was assessed as the culmination of the struggle of the Soviet state against hooliganism[7].
