But the particular way it happened was simply because oil and car companies wanted everyone to drive, and they prioritized a car-centric lifestyle, this also happened to also achieve the result of alienating people from one another. Whether that's by design or just a feature built into the way capitalism develops I have no idea.
Anyway Vegas seems walkable at first glance but it actually sucks.
