I think the left desperately needs a materialist reconciliation of women's relationship to the state and the means of production.
While this is only true in the West, women have the unique power to enslave men into debt peonage simply by opening their legs and getting pregnant via child support.
Debtors prison is supposed to be prohibited by the Constitution because even in the late 1700's the booj realized that it's a dysfunctional social policy even from a capitalist perspective.  
Yet every year, millions of men are pushed to the brink via wage garnishments, court fees, and even imprisonment all because of a arbitrary debt set by the state an their bitter ex.
Men have nothing even close to equivalent over women in the west.
Yet the left continues to ignore this very obvious material difference state power each sex can wield.

women in the 19th absolutely worked as proletarians, women were always part of the wage working class, and were actually preferred in industries like textiles, as well as being expected to perform 'women's work'  raising children, housework etc.  his is also especially true of black women, women of color, who often found it easier to find employment ( as maids etc. ) than men
