>actually, we fell in love as children but forgot about it… until now
Jesus Christ what an awful trope. What are some anime or manga with actually good romance development? Pic very related.

I am so confused with what is being said, do you mean the 'childhood romance' trope?

The surprise childhood romance trope. It was bad enough when Elfen Lied tried it but they just keep doing it!

I actually first encountered this trope in a mid-'90s game. Makes me wonder if this is a common theme in Japanese literature for some reason.

Kind of works if MC has dissociative amnesia in general or because of phyical or mental trauma. I kind of like how simple it is to tell a story like that. Basically put the MC and the audience in the same shoes. I like this trope.

That didn't bother me as much as the ending peddling malthusian/primmie nonsense. I liked the horror bits sprinkled all over (meat cabbages, etc), and the mechanical designs are underrated. Still disappointing, though.

That's the whole plot of love hina.

OP here, sorry if my post was confusing. I was using Blue Gender as an example of a good romance, without some shitty trope about forgotten childhoods or whatever. The plot jumps off the rails sadly about halfway through once the romance is wrapped up, but while it's there it's great.

Kimi ga Nozomu Eien is the most mature romance anime i know, ironically based on an eroge

Eroge can be based. There's a reason why there's a term to separate eroge only meant to jack off to and another for modern literary VN masterpieces.

Definitely a boring trope, but I can ignore it if I like a story enough.
