When I was a wee lad I read Katawa Shoujo and ended up really liking Emi. She hit all the right spots for me personality wise. I finished her route with the impression that she was supposed to be the token tomboy among the main girls. To my astonishment, when I went on the Katawa Shoujo forum I found out that other people did not consider her a tomboy. How? She's the athletic, bold, energetic girl who likes to play rough. Did I not just describe a tomboy? Is it because she doesn't "look" like a tomboy? Ridiculous. It was as if at some point I had been transported to bizarro world where the word tomboy had been hijacked by pathetic fetishists who now tied the word tomboy to physical appearance.

As the years went by I found myself highly attracted to 2D girls with varying types of what are culturally seen as masculine qualities. Like the aforementioned athletic, bold, energetic, likes to play rough but also aggressive, assertive, emotionally reserved, brash, vulgar, messy, short-tempered, rhetorical, analytical, philosophical, gluttonous, as lustful as a man and so on. In other words, women who behave like the worst and best of male cultural stereotypes. Do they "look" like tomboys? Some do. But even then I have nothing in common with the pathetic fetishists, the most egregious and possibly loudest of which circlejerk over 2D girls who only "look" like tomboys and otherwise do not deviate much from the assumed average girl who on top of that unironically fantasize about turning said "tomboy" into a traditional 1950s cooking, breeding and raising servant (read: wife).

Don't believe me? Give a definition for the word tomboy. Then objectively think of all the fictional girls who come to your mind that fit that definition. How many have you never thought of as tomboys?

It's not just the word tomboy that is being systematically destroyed by pathetic fetishists. The word gyaru did not simply refer to physical appearance alone, but a whole subculture. To be a gyaru it's not enough to dress the part, you also have to act the part else you're a poser right? That's how subcultures work. Is there an explanation as to why so many 3d animes or animes with CGI look noticeably fucking awful? I cant possibly fathom as to how any individual can fuck up so badly on aesthetics when it comes to anime as westerners already can make plenty of 3d cartoons that look just fine with good art styles, hell even for individual artists making good looking CGI isnt hard as your essentially getting 3d squares and triangles with images stretched on them to move around a screen for several minutes and artists like Ian Hubert have proven that large budgets for good looking graphics is far from difficult or expensive, so what gives?

I watched the first 6 episodes of NGE

And wow, I fucking hated it to be perfectly honest. It seems like the entire show is only about Shinji's angst (and Rei increasingly I'm sure) and the characters various emotional issues, but like, okay, who cares? The situations they're thrown into are totally absurd and ridiculous so how can I take any of this drama stuff seriously?

Like these kids are the last best hope of mankind and they seem to be totally unsupported by anyone? Shinji was gonna live in a totally empty tenement and it's only his superior's minor moment of reasonable judgement that means he lives with her instead (and she is clearly no kind of parent figure), and Rei lives in a dark, dingy slum dwelling made of all concrete with nobody taking care of her either?

Like, their emotional reactions seems somewhat understandable but also completely dull and uninteresting because the situation they're in is absurd (and even then they both come off as pathetic and unlikeable - and no you can't say 'but that's the point!!', that doesn't make it entertaining to watch).

The less said about the non-angst portions of the story the better, the 'fights' are 10 minutes of foreplay for like 60 seconds of action if that, and while that's a common problem with anime, that doesn't make it excusable.

Yes this series is old and I'm sure it has inspired so much but people still recommend to watch it and it just seemed like garbage. Almost nothing is explained which means I can't possibly feel invested in this absurd world in any way. Every part of the setting seems to have been created with 'style over substance' in mind, urgh, just overall I found it absurd. Try not to give too much spoilers because I guess I might still try watch it, but I really don't see it redeeming itself.

Though for context I also hated 'The Godfather' and 'No Country For Old Men' and thought they were pretentious overlong shit, so maybe I'm just a contrarian.

I'm on episode 4 and it's pretty enjoyable so far.

It's about girls whose friends/loved ones committed suicide, and they fight in some fucked up fantasy land in order to resurrect them, or so we're lead to believe. The main character is a girl named Ohto Ai, a borderline hiki whose best friend was apparently bullied to death. She buys an egg from a cicada, and when she cracks it open another girl, also a victim of bullying, emerges to be hunted by distorted apparitions which reflect her tormentors in life.

The animation is pretty good and there's some fun fight scenes. I wouldn't say it's amazing, but so far the story is intriguing enough to keep me interested.

I wanted to get into delinquent manga from the 70s-80s starting with Sakigake!! Otokojuku. I torrented the whole manga's raws to practice my Japanese, as well, but I could never get around to reading it.
Likewise, even though it's not 2D (but it is adapted from manga) I torrented all of Sukeban Deka and could never watch more than 1 episode.

Castlevania

Just watched the new season of Castlevania the other night on Netflix and it wasn't too bad. The animation seems significantly jankier this season in a lot of places and it looks like they're using the awful CG models from Berserk or Kingdom or some shit at times. A couple of the fights are really fluid and fun, but a lot just looked… bad.

Warren Ellis isn't a spectacular writer but I did like the anti-aristocrat/ruling class and anti-imperialism themes. It's pretty explicit in calling out the greed of the wealthy and the futility of imperialism, and the main characters overtly say that the ruling classes are either incapable or unwilling to help so that the only option is for people to organize themselves. I'm not sure if the multiculturalism we see in the refugee town is meant as Liberal multicult pap or as a somewhat subtle gesture towards internationalism, but I suppose it could be interpreted either way. I don't know how many black or brown people there were in 14th century Wallachia, but in the context of the show it seems like it makes sense we have vampires from Copenhagen to Cathay in on Dracula's omnicidal war, so it's easy to imagine there's a lot of population disruption going on.

Not a great season, but fun. Three Marx out of five.

The Mexican Revolution is the perfect premise for an anime. It has literally everything a creator could want. Action, drama, the potential for effective allegory and metaphor, sick characters, beautiful and varied settings, politics, war, every social and economic stratum is relevant and can be explored, the story is already laid out for writers to play around with, etc etc etc.
I think, if it were to be made, Zapata should be the main protagonist since he's probably the most interesting being the principled underdog freedom fighter who was the only one actually fighting for substantial revolutionary change. That being said, it shouldn't exclusively be from his perspective. It should be one of those shows that dedicate large chunks of time to focusing on other main or secondary characters so we can really understand every side of the conflict, allowing twists and betrayals to hit harder.
It'd need to be really long-form cause the revolution was like 10 years long and some pretext would be needed prior to the revolution since it's important to understand the role Don Diaz played in creating the conditions for the revolution to start.

To me this seems like the perfect show idea and idk why no one has bothered making it yet. Japs need to get a studio on this shit asap. If not the Japs, burgers can pull an Avatar the Last Airbender or Castlevania type beat and just make it themselves.

Anyway, I just recently watched season 1 - 9 (and some one offs) and I was wondering what's your guys opinions on the show? I personally enjoyed it, with these being my top three:
1) Bart gets an F
2) Homers Enemy
3) E-I-(Annoyed Grunt)

It's pretty obvious why 1 & 3 are solid, but I don't see people talk about 2 that much. Which I don't get why.

Homers Enemy; Frank Grimes, is obviously the personification of the "dream American worker". The dream worker who in any dire situation will simply just "pull up his boot straps" and work harder to get a better life. The reality is though is that, no one actually cares about him going through those hardships. Yes, while Burns did originally try to hire him after seeing his struggle, he was predictably ignored after Burns found the next shiny thing to gawk at, and the hardships of Frank was quickly ignored by the rest of society.

Maybe it was obvious and I'm slow, but the lesson that it taught is still a great reminder, that is: a system that abandons you to unnecessary hardships is not going to care if you actually succeeded in those hardships.

This reality is hammered in further with Homer existence, one who has gotten off lucky and lived by all accounts a fairly fulfilling life. Any mess ups that Homer has cause is ignored since as long as profit is made, they don't care what he does.

And his death is a great ending, Homer continues in the system with his actions since he cares not for the boss "making" his precious money, while Frank takes the approach that work is a virtue and mocks homer only to get killed accidentally when taking his mockery to the extreme.

Perhaps I'm looking into it too much, or I'm viewing it backwards, what do you think /anime/ or /hobby/ if this is moved?

Yeah, it SEEMS like pure wish fulfillment, but it isn't even good at that because in most shows there's only relentless teasing instead of any actual romance and the MC only ends up with one of the candidates anyway.
The only explanation I can come up with is that it's just a way to increase the appeal (and thus commercial potential) of a standard romance series by cramming it with different archetypes. Either that or anime fans just love getting teased with no real guarantee of a reward, which would explain a lot, actually.

What have m/a/nga have you been reading lately, /anime/? For me personally it was probably Beastars and Chainsaw Man, both until the last released chapter at the time and i haven't gotten to reading them again. Both are fairly enjoyable and interesting, although fair warning that the latter is rather angsty. It has some nice character designs, though.

Let's talk Oregairu

Yesterday I finished watching season 3, and I haven't been able to put it out of my mind since. I don't like that, it's just a high school romantic comedy after all. Hopefully writing a few lines about it will make that go away.

They really surprised my by committing to a definite conclusion. The way the story resolved, the way the love triangle resolved, was not unexpected in my opinion - what we got was what the story had been building up to, what had been telegraphed from the beginning. But given the ambiguous endings of the previous seasons and the often bittersweet conclusion to minor arcs, I didn't think they would play it completely straight in the end. Fully expected them to either leave the matter unresolved again, or end with everyone-losing-but-growing-from-the-experience. But they stuck the landing, and for all intents and purposes the story has concluded, the curtain has dropped. This too was made clear before the actual finale of course, with the repeated references to endings and conclusions in the dialogue, but that doesn't sink in until it has happened.

Maybe that's what's irking me - I've gone a couple of years living with this as something that promised to be forever unresolved, and now I'm faced with abrupt closure. I didn't want it to ever be really over.

Still, I have a gripe. Call it team-Yui sour grapes if you want. Story-wise, the love triangle obviously resolved as it "should" have, if it was to have any positive resolution at all. No need to go into the details of why that is, a blind man can see it. But it leaves a taste that's not just bittersweet but straight up bitter. What the story builds to is an unironic Hiki-Yukinon power couple. The culmination of their on-screen relationship consists of them coming together to do [b]event management[/b], which had become a bit of a repeating trope in the latter half of the series. The girlboss of the wealthy family wins, and acquires an utterly loyal and at least moderately competent future husband who will help her take over and run the family empire. We are expected to have sympathy for the rich girl; how terrible it is for her to be burdened with all these expectations and these exacting family members, and how much of a savior her future husband proves to be… Frankly I don't like it, and I don't have as much sympathy as the story would want me to. Fuck the rich and their problems.

This in contrast to the loser of the equation, the normie girl from a normie family whose demand / offer for a relationship was to normalize and domesticate Hiki (expressed explicitly as a list of wishes). Now on the one hand you can take this latter option, the demand to become essentially another, more normal person, as a betrayal of the "genuine" Hiki, asking him to live a lie. Yet, more so in season one than later, it is left unclear to what extent the weirdness and creepiness is what's genuine, or if it's learned / feigned to accommodate the loner existence. Maybe the relationship that won out really was the more unhealthy and less wholesome one, setting the protagonist up for a ruinous life of plots, schemes and hard work, in stead of a healthy family life.

Some scattered other observations. There was an obvious tonal and art shift after seasons one. We went from a (only marginally) romantic comedy, to a romantic drama with only occasional humorous interludes. I can't say it works perfectly, it's too noticeable for that, but it does work. Baited by the comedy, it leaves you trapped being invested in the characters once it moves to drama. Good job, show, you caught me.

One thing I can't figure out, something that I've seen in other shows too. Where are all the parents? There is not a single father in the entirety of the show iirc, or any other male authority figure for that matter. The only parents we do see are the mothers for the two legs of the love triangle, appropriately contrasted: one wholesome and supportive, the other essentially antagonistic and even sinister. For the protagonist, we see neither. I would appreciate it if someone could give a deeper interpretation here, beyond the observation that it is a reflection (or god forbid normalization) of the toxic Japanese corporate culture requiring workers to stay late. If there is an essay-length look at this I would love to read it.

The manga/anime industry is inherently anti-art because the creators are incentivised to milk the fuck out of their series untill no one cares about them anymore - even to a more extreme degree than the Hollywood franchises and TV shows. I'm sure you could find a good story in most mangas, the problem is that it's buried under the 95% unnecessary bullshit and it lacks the proper execution because it's created under a lack of time. The deadline driven nature of comics prevents them from entering a higher level of art.

Finally watched Kino no Tabi after a years-old recc, and I'm curious what the broader analysis on it is, and where we figure it stands. I found the 2003 series was pretty left on a few topics, specifically how many countries provide an allegory for the flawed and ideological way people perceive work and its purpose.
However I've been seeing a few wrinkles to that. I can't help but notice all the times in Kino no Tabi that a revolution against a king is exactly what causes a country to fail (not all but most, and most successful revolutions have the monarch secretly still hanging around,) begging the question of whether the show/books is ultimately projecting a Burkean outlook on the world.
This is compounded by how much emphasis is placed on the individual, though this is somewhat inevitable considering it focuses on a solitary wandering protagonist. However that emphasis on personal responsibility could be easily reframed in a negative way; it would be easy for some right-winger to interpret "country of radio waves" in the 2017 anime, where random murders are blamed on a radio tower that turns out to no longer exist, so that the any sort of institutional critique explaining crime could be imposed metaphorically on the tower, reducing societal dysfunction to purely individual choices.

I know that since there have been Kino stories for 20 years, most of what I've said may well be overturned in another tale–but do my my critiques stick?

Catharsis in Anime & Manga

Have you ever noticed that a large portion of anime and manga expresses the desire to escape from the monotony of late capitalism in Japan? There's a prevalence of scenarios in seinen (young adult / 20-50s~) media which protagonists are taken in by loving females. As well as a bulk of romcoms to support Japan's large population of "herbivore males" (men uninterested in relationships.)
Anime was a different medium during the Japanese economic boom, then shifted into a much more niche market in correlation to Japan's long economic recession. I would argue there's a continuity in the fanbase in spite of anime's reorientation. It's simply that the demographic which supports has gone through a visible degeneration as the economy has degenerated. I would make no fault of "otakus" for being the way they are and the media they eat up, but rather the stifling corporate climate. Japan is perhaps worse than the US than in working conditions.

Dr. Stone's premise is quite intresting but I feel it don't really uses it's premise to it's fullest. I mean Tsukasa's plan to destroy all of the adults and to try to "Stop Science from existing" is doomed to fail, not to mention his conclusions are entirely based on the notions of "Human Nature" and "Adults being greedy".

Does anyone know how the light novels ended? I really liked how the anime started, (and this scene was amazing.) I just lost interest after the main character's father died and they had to invent a bunch of random new arcs with throwaway characters while she traveled the planet. They should've kept the zombie dad instead of killing him since he actually had some character development in the first 3 episodes, unlike the moe characters they added later.

into two of the most soy filled baby generations y and z. For people around my age(late 90sfetuses)
We grew up in the tail end of toonami. Basically the era of Naruto and One Piece, this explains
why Naruto and One Piece is more consumed by zoomers while the previous gen grew up with dbz
and pokemon and maybe sailor moon. Folks around my age mainly grew up with NAruto on CN
one piece had a pretty shitty first impression and it didn't last that long on CN anyways
so this is why Naruto is more liked with zoomers. Anyways there's this new gen of anime fags
