Why are tsunderes so cute? In real life they would be annoying as hell, but I just can't get enough of them in anime.

Tsundere is the most dialectical of all waifus. To be a man of tsunderes is to be a man of action. The tsundere alters the MC's being into becoming; the friction she creates necessitates progression; thus creating the revolutionary subject.

What about the childhood ditzy friend? I'm talking about quality ones - when love is the result of the shattering of the status quo and subsequent resolving of various contradictions along the journey! although it is true that the ditz often loves the mc beforehand, doesn't that love not only emerges in the mc as well, but becomes much more robust in the childhood friend?

>when love is the result of the shattering of the status quo and subsequent resolving of various contradictions along the journey
The issue is that normally that would be in contradiction to the childhood friend trope. Childhood friends simply are are the feudal remnants of arranged marriages. You're expected to marry your childhood friend because your bond has been cultivated and sanctioned by paternity. This situation is static, and comes in conflict through the opposition of the tsundere (or any other best girl.) It's a dichotomy that actually comes to proxy a lot of social movements; the transition from the rural to the urban, the relaxation of sexuality, the fucking MC becoming less dense, etc…

because they provide the standoffish approach that's eventually rewarded as opposed to a childhood friend route where the girl seems to fall into MC lap

It depends on what kind of tsundere we're talking about. There's the classic tsundere, modern tsundere and characters who simply are embarrassed to show affection or break their usual cool/proud persona like >>885
The only one that would never work in real life is the modern tsundere.
There's just something endearing about seeing a character change and react accordingly, reactions that you don't normally see.

>>882
So that's why childhood friends are so boring! Most of the time, at least

I meant in romance anime and games lol
Though the few times I've found a childhood friend not boring, they were tsundere too.

What is that archetype called then?

Shōnen rival? But seriously, I'll be honest, I've only seen male characters like that (competitive, hostile, mean, but have moments where they display other emotions, gradually warm up to their rival and in the end they become friends). I'm pretty sure that even if it's friendship, not romance, it counts as tsundere. I don't even know why I made that distinction, it was dumb, sorry.

B-but I don't want to derail the thread, I believe you guys were talking about cute tsundere girls. They're almost always either "modern" (the most popular currently, usually portrayed as borderline bipolar and kinda shit tbh) or "classic" (which I guess is similar to what I described before). I don't think the personality of a modern tsundere would be tolerable in real life.

Can you please give some examples for classic and modern tsunderes? I am not an expert and have a hard time understanding what the difference is.

A classic tsundere is a character that starts out acting aggressive or cold (usually towards the object of their affection) but over the course of the story becomes more familiar with that person and starts showing affection. Classic tsunderes change permanently.

A modern tsundere is what you see all the time nowadays, a bipolar character that acts hostile one moment and the next she's all embarrassed or lovey-dovey, then goes back to being an asshole. This attitude barely changes.

I used to like tsunderes, now I find them really annoying and immature, I like girls who are mature enough to say what they feel and to have an intellectual discussion rather than doing the same escapism episode after episode.

repressed conservative japanese culture causing people to be unable to express their true emotions of love and thus causing animators to make up archetypes of women that are aggressively horny for them or something like that?

Yes.
Also otaku's delusions about being loved by girls who clearly don't like them.

I always thought it was suppose to be something new to the norm of polite Japanese women.
