Madoka was great but did it really need a bunch of sequels and movies?

Not really.

Pretty good show from what I remember but I cringe when people give it the “unlike OTHER magical girl anime…” treatment.

It is not bad, but it's annoying that often it gets mistaken with regard as to why it is good, by those who have not seen other magical girl series.
Also frankly, the ending of the Rebellion movie already is okay as it is, and probably could be the "communists' preferred option", so changing it to more match the television anime episodes' "upbeat" finale would probably lessen the impact and dilute the theme.

I love Madoka, especially for its strong ending. I didn't like Rebellion because it more or less undid the ending of the original show. I guess I'll watch the new movie, I'm sure it'll be generally entertaining. But I don't expect it to "improve" the story after Rebellion. The best way to improve the story with Rebellion is to pretend it didn't happen.

I wish they would have gone with Magia Record-style spinoffs right from the get go (though even that wasn't as good as original madoka)

All those people laughed at me when I said Rebellion wasn't a definitive ending… Can't really tell them I told you so anyway.

Was expecting the dark twist when I first started watching it, but was still surprised when it turned into a fairly blatant Christ allegory.

Like most magical girls, it's probably based off Taoism/Chinese and Japanese mythos (And Faust, and Nutcracker and other fairytales in Madoka case).

The nature of evil here is a fundamental component of the universe, an "impurity" that is constantly created by all life. Nobody is good or evil: everybody has capacity to swing one way or the other depending on the circumstances, and everybody's shadow side will be manifested under enough stress and bad circumstances.
