US-Turkish commentator stopped at border, questioned about Gaza views

Hasan Piker says he was held by US Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) at Chicago’s O’Hare airport and questioned for nearly two hours about his views on Trump and Israel’s war on Gaza.

In a livestream on Twitch, where he has 2.8 million followers, Piker, who was carrying a US passport when he entered the country, said he was led to a private room on his arrival.

He said a CBP officer questioned him about his criticism of Israel’s war on Gaza, asking him, “Do you like Hamas? Like, do you support Hamas? Do you think Hamas is a resistance group?”

The incident has drawn criticism from rights advocates.

Chip Gibbons, the policy director of Defending Rights & Dissent, said the rights group was “deeply disturbed that CBP is stopping political commentators at the border to interrogate them about First Amendment-protected activities”.

“Such an abuse of power is an affront to press freedom,” Gibbons said.

The second part doesn't really follow the first part.

The Assange thing specifically followed a wave of pro-surveillance and censorship reforms under Bush, and the Snowden thing was also directly related to that. It's gotten markedly worse in the past 20 years, and in the past year+ the waves of arrests specifically for "wrongthink" on Palestine have increased.

It's very weird that that's the first place you go when I point out that whistleblowers & random twitch streamers are not 1:1. I've been criticizing this shit for 20 years, so no, I do not agree that people should be nicer to the president or pretend that incremental worsening is not bad because it was also bad before. I said it's not surprising that he got arrested either because there were far worse precedents before, you'd expect 'em to go harder on him since it's worse now. Well, certainly they don't call it libertarianism because libertarianism implies a deeper commitment to liberty. But what liberalism is in practice is just economic deregulation and liberal democracy, that's it.

Also, yes, libertarianism is a critique of liberalism through these same liberal enlightenment values themselves. Proudhon used natural rights to critique the concept of private property for example.
