For years and years the debate has raged over whether video games qualify as art, and as ridiculous as that debate is there's one undeniable aspect of it: video games have ideological content.

For that reason this thread should be used to approach games from a political standpoint with their political content in mind. The only thing to keep in mind here is that YOU CANNOT TALK ABOUT GAMERGATE.

Here's a big list of video games with left wing content to help discussion get going:

>whether video games qualify as art
Anyone who isn't a boomer already knows video games count as art.

>ML v Anarchists.
Isn't Brigador just corporate PMC companies in mechs beating the ever living fuck out of each other over a resource rich planet?

Bro I just wanna play phantom forces and minecraft all they stfu about politics and lemme have fun AHHHHH

you WILL talk about politics in video games and you WILL like it because fiction aways mirrors reality.

>games featuring sympathetic portrayals of socialism.
A lot of those games portray socialism/marxists in a dark light, wtf is this picture even.

haha bridge go boooooooom

I don't think they can be classified as "art." Video games can be "artistic" but not "works of art." Video games are designed to sell as many copies as possible and to be as addictive as possible, so they're more like recreational drugs.

By that standard how is bourgeois art even a thing? Also there are games by smaller studios that does have something to say for example: Night In the Woods, Disco Elysium and anything by Kremlin Games.

that's like saying commercials or ads are art.

it's schlock, it's kitsch, it's anti-art.

>Music isn't art
Actually make some art you philistine

I think the characteristic of the medium/media of art changes according to the progression of productive forces.
Just because it is easier to commodify some mediums/media, does not mean it has less potential in creating art.

videogames are for nerds
have sex loser

A lot of paintings made during the feudal era were literally political advertisements and propaganda.

so what?

Okay boomer, by sales block buster video games constantly outsell Hollywood movies.

hollywood movies are for manchilds
have sex

My general rule is that as soon as the medium requires user interaction for it to progress anywhere, it's not art. It's just a game that you as the homo sapien hairless ape get to play around with. Many other animals play games. 4-legged animals like to kick and roll balls on a field. Many chimpanzees like to press keys on a keyboard, poke on touch screens ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qyJomdyjyvM ) to play a memory game and some even scroll on a smartphone and watch videos on Instagram (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XTiZqCQsfa8 ) . Actual art is too abstract for any animal other than humans to be capable of fully comprehending the meaning.

There are a few factions but you play as a mercenary for the Solo Nobre Concern, which hires fighters from other factions to overthrow the government. Then you have the NEP/Loyalist government forces that are like Space Juche Dengists, the Corvid anarchists, and Spacers, which are pretty much transhumanist psychopaths.

haha, I made this many years ago, I hadn't played a lot of the games on there at the time and it was based on community suggestions, I would add some games and remove some if I made it again today

What would you add/remove?

File: 1624814735830.jpg ( 132.64 KB , 602x599 , DungeonsAndDragons.jpg )

You seem to be ignoring that going back to table top games there are stories and world building.

I would probably remove Rocketbirds, and maybe Dungeons of Dredmor, (probably some more if I thought about it more) also I might split off the games that only promote social democracy into their own list (idk), as for what I would add, can't think of any off the top of my head but plenty of cool games have come out in the last few years about communism and socialism. Like Democratic Socialism Simulator for example.

I would also add scores for a lot of games that I have actually played since the list was made like Mother Russia Bleeds.

Oh yeah and Disco Elysium is an obvious one, plus TNO, Equestria at War, and so on…

Video games have great potential to radicalize people because unlike other art forms, they are based around teaching people mechanics and enforcing a working understanding of mechanical systems (at least, a lot of the time - walking simulators etc are another question). Not only is there the possibility in video games to teach people the mechanics of politics and economics (a very straightforward and vulgar example), the very process of learning and understanding game mechanics predisposes people to understanding materialism and learning how to analyze how systems function. Video games are already good but could be made even better with the right application of game design. Properly radical games should be integrated into education that communists engage in, and I will fight you to the death over this.

That rec chart is kind of old. It needs Tonight We Riot and a bunch of other stuff.
>Peace Walker
I didn't finish it, and I know that it has actual communists in the story, but doesn't MSF do some jobs for non-leftists as well? Or was that just in MGSV?
>Ladykiller in a Bind
A meme recommendation? As far as I know, that's just a lesbian bondage VN. Is it actually leftist in any way?

why not? Not that I want to. The thread subject didn't even make me think about it.

>Video games are designed to sell as many copies as possible and to be as addictive as possible
That doesn't apply to all video games, particularly indie/free games. In those cases they might actually be considered works of art.

Plus, there's a lot of people involved in the creation of games, so the writer, designer, programmer, lead artist, lead composer, etc. might not personally be trying to sell many copies but make a game out of creativity. In which case I guess you might be right about games being only "artistic" but not "art".

>videogames are for nerds
Not anymore. Corporations have realized this, that's why everyone who has at least a cellphone plays them. Even the military knew this before video games were popular. Video games have massive propagandistic and educational potential.

>Video games are designed to sell as many copies as possible and to be as addictive as possible
the exact same applies to music and television as well. doesnt make those any less "art".
many of the most popular video games are shit art, made for shit reasons, but again the exact same applies to music and television. youre either a massive pseud or havent engaged with the art form outside of fifa or cod.
go ahead and tell me with a straight face that something like pathologic is not a work of art.
