Unit Promotion

Whether real-time or turn-based, probably somewhere around half the games in the strategy genre implement unit promotion in some form or another. But is it even good game design?

In the best-case scenario it gets implemented in a way that doesn't cause snowballing (Pikmin, which doesn't feature 2P versus play anyway). However, in pretty much all instances it has the effect of discouraging sacrificial play as a tactic, in effect reducing the overall depth of a given game. I'm starting to think this may have been the genre's Original Sin. What do you think anon?

Hidden Agenda: A Post-Revolutionary Game

Share you best outcome from playing the game!

This was my best so far. My strategy was to first get the military under control, then do land reform and set up the economy, hold an election with as much legitimacy as possible, and finally to build up stuff like medicine, education, and infrastructure. It went alright for the most part, but the IMF is going to kill the country later, much like what happened in Yugoslavia.

So what did you do? What worked for you?

I understand that in a competitve game losses are inevitable. I know that. Losing is always a possibility in a game.

but jesus fucking christ, when the losses start mounting. Self-loathing doesn't even begin to describe it. Losses are guaranteed but victories never are despite how hard it feels like I'm trying and all I want is a sign I'm progressing and doing better.

Nostalgia Check

Have you managed to free yourself of your nostalgia biases? Let's perform a test. Think of some games in series or franchises that you you experienced first as a kid before trying out earlier entries. Are you capable of recognizing any of the earlier entries as superior games?

My first console was an SNES and I had to think a bit on this one. From my perspective it seemed like games were on a general improvement trend with technology in the early '90s. It's hard for me to think of SNES games that weren't better than their counterparts in previous generations. But I will freely admit that Super C and Gradius II are much superior games to Contra III and Gradius III.

Good music in bad games

All right, fine… It's been 18 years, and I'll finally admit it! As much as I loath this insulting trash game for daring to call itself Mario Bros. (and the trend of dumbed down trash games that followed in its wake), Koji Kondo at least managed to belt out another irresistible banger for the main stage theme.

It's a testament to a composer's skill that I find myself getting this theme stuck in my head all the time, imagining that it's some nostalgic theme from a much earlier Mario game. But no, in fact it had the great misfortune to be attached to this turd. Well done, Kondo-san.

Liberal Crime Squad

This was originally made by the Dwarf Fortress guy Tarn "ToadyOne" Adams back during the George W. Bush administration, but since it's open source there are many independent fan versions. I love this piece of shit game. Maybe I'm mentally ill. Something about making a Blanquist terror cell and grinding their skills while they do cringe adventurism is super fun to me. I wish there were a more communist-flavored version of this game.

Can we talk about how video games like Age of Empires/Civilisation etc are conduits to right wing thought about political economy of globalisation?

Simply, they portray human society and civilisations as inherently atomised and singular in their development as well as presenting culture as essentialist.

Also, an anon posted an academic article related to this recently, but I've lost it, if anyone could repost that would be great.

Death race

All right can someone explain why the hell there aren't more death race games? I've never been able to understand this. Why would I want to settle for kiddie kart racing where no one ever dies when I could strap guns to my vehicle and kill everyone in front of me?

It's always baffled me why there's a whole bunch of car combat games taking place in an arena, but nobody wants to combine the idea with racing. What gives?

What happened?

Why did this game suck so bad? Capcom had just finished making Mega Man X2, arguably one of the best platformers in the entire Mega Man franchise.

And then came this turd… Sure it looks and sounds great, but mechanically it's full of problems. It inexplicably gives Mega Man a giant sprite (like 50% larger than Mega Man X or Mega Man's size in the NES games), and consequently is full of shallow platforming and somewhat frustrating, claustrophobic action. It also only lets you play four levels at a time (reducing replayability), and for some reason they chose to completely ignore the finely tuned weapon charge mechanics from the Mega Man X games and gave you a gun that takes so long to charge up that you mostly don't want to bother ever charging it at all. I've always had a hard time understanding why this game turned out the way it is.

Anti-Trust in Video Games

Looks like people are finally getting a little sick of monopolists' bullshit. A California court just ruled in Epic Games v. Google that Google has engaged in a variety of anti-competitive behaviors with their smartphone app store. This all came to a head when Google removed Fortnite from their store because Epic Games tried to make their own independent revenue without Google's approval through in-game microtransactions.

Setting aside that smartphones are trash game machines and this lawsuit is basically one scumbag company vs another scumbag company, are we about to see a turning point in what electronic stores are allowed to do to their customers?

Postal 4

Knew that my criticisms wouldn't be taken seriously on /v/, so I came here.

What had made the initial POSTAL 2 have integrity was how it laughed in the face of moral panic—whether on the conservative side against video games or book-banning, and later on the acts of organizations such as PETA.

The modern day's conservative moral panic is mainly focused toward the LGBTQ+ and immigrants. POSTAL 4 had an amazing opportunity to comment on these things(we already had an entire group dedicated to getting rid of books in the last game), they side with the moral panic narrative by only telling a story about the rabid SJWs.

The terrorists in POSTAL 2 were also done quite well; they could be found everywhere on the map(the grocery store, the mall, behind RWS) to show how ridiculous the narrative of "terrorists could be anywhere" that justified the Patriot Act was. They could have played it this way, too. They could have had random trans people hiding among the populace looking to cut your dick off. They could have had a mad university professor trying to hypnotize a local college campus into having gay sex. They could have had the book burners show up mid-way through that, but then target Postal Dude midway through because "Hey, look at those buttons on his clothes! Those are a secret symbol of the queer agenda! I saw it online!" and then have them target him as well.

Instead, POSTAL 4 just uses the cheap conservative joke that its ancestor would have tore to shreds and loses its shine because of it. It feels like if a modern sitcom writer tried to make a POSTAL game without understanding any of the bite that made those games special. I'm not going to pretend that they were fine art or anything like that, but it was a special component.

/gamedev/ - Game Development General (SHARE YOUR VIDEOGAME IDEAS ITT)

So I'm not an experienced game developer or anything, but I figured we should have a general dedicated to this sort of thing, especially since I'm interested to hear peoples' ideas on lefty-orientated videogames that would be cool for me to make.
I've been using Blender since I was 11 or 12 years old (I'm 20 now) so I'm pretty much at a level now where I can model any game asset I want. I'm also in school for Computer Engineering, and have been a hobby programmer since I was around 14 working with Python, C, and GLSL shaders, so I can script pretty much anything as well. I would say my main weaknesses when approaching a task like this are Sculpting, Spriting, and Painting, so to any drawfags/artfags with skills: I invite you to contribute on whatever projects we end up embarking on.

Don't care that most people hate them. David Cage's games are fucking based. They're entirely schlock and "so bad it's good" but so what? its entertaining. If anything the fault is that it's not enough of a schlocky david cage's stream of consciousness and that there are people around him trying to make things normal. david cage is the zack snyder of video games. he needs to be given full creative control but a time limitation.

The only valid criticism is that things go on to for too long. But how can anyone hate this sequence? It kicks so much ass

Reposting from the Hoi 4 thread:

I found a supposed leak detailing the L-NPP paths, despite the lib bias of the devs Gus still seems pretty based. Plus it also has the 1976 and 1980 L-NPP candidates.

>At this stage, mass prosecution of the upper class will begin, now that the courts are sufficiently saturated with L-NPP appointees. Hall’s FBI director will have assembled lists and evidence on the illicit gains of the American wealthy, and, starting all at once, mass arrests will be carried out of the most unsavory individuals. This is a crisis as well, as this upheaval causes capital flight from the United States, which Hall can react to in a variety of ways - including shooting down private planes.

Late Capitalism Simulator

Lately I’ve seen a huge influx of good games that try to update the outdated capitalist realist Cyberpunk genre to the current political and economic landscape. Stuff like Disco Elysium is getting more and more recognition they rightfully deserve for depicting the hopeless and bleak death of modern revolution. However they’re still have some semblance of hope like with Ghostrunner having the corporation being destroyed by a revolution in contrast to the sad oppression of the system.

Another great but obscure example is whatever the fuck Cruelty Squad is. It’s fully embraced the boring drug fueled dystopia aesthetic while delivering basically Deus Ex but without the stealth. Compared to the faux shell of a Cyberpunk game 2077 was (full of cyber but nothing about the societal implications of such technologies other than some edgy infantile “message” about “soul”), this game have everything and everyone be miserable using the cyber-enhancements. Space colonization and AI being pipe dreams. Corporations are not knowingly malicious but only apart of the rot of capitalism.

Fanmods, total conversions, and independent projects

I was kind of intending this thread to be a storehouse of replies for

<hurrr but who would work without profit motive???? you ever thought about that commie?

where fans have for one reason or another put in a great deal of time and effort to maintain or recreate digital experiences.

For example, I stumbled on some videos for a fan recreation of TIE fighter which, from the clips of it, looks really neat. It seems like video related is a mod based off of another mod for the million year old X-wing Alliance engine. I need to look further into it and see if it's built off of the original game, or its own standalone deal meant to mimic it.

Then there's also Tamriel Reborn that seems like it isn't just a remake of the original, but actually expands on the original Morrowind, I guess to add back in all of the content that had to be cut. Apparently they've been going at it since 2001.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CKyrzZRo-O0

Then there's DOOM, which has just had an insane amount of work done on it and with it since it was released. It's actually pretty amazing to see what people are capable of doing with it after so long.

EVE Online Facing Second 'Summer of Rage' Fan Outcry

<CCP Games tried new monetization amid a ship shortage, and it's backfired

>On top of the scarcity patches, roughly one year ago, one of the largest wars in EVE’s history began. The war has raged hot for nearly a year, causing destruction on a scale that is unheard of in EVE’s 18 year history, further diminishing the resource stockpiles of players and driving the cost of the vessels players need to fight in the war through the roof. Outside of the financial toll the war has taken on player wallets, the mental stress of the conflict also seems to be building in players on all sides. War in EVE is one of the most interesting things the game has to offer, and probably one of the more realistic simulations of massive real life campaigns available in the virtual realm. Each side needs competent generals, massive supply chains, and most importantly, players to fight in battles that can last for hours across all time zones multiple days a week. Over time, these things take a measurable toll on people who are just trying to play a game to have some fun and blow off steam. With something close to half of the game’s active playerbase involved in the conflict, it’s easy to understand how the situation could create some tension among players. Further compounding the stress of war and waning pocketbooks are the latest changes to the already complex industry system. Almost all spaceships and the ammunition and equipment for those ships are produced by players. Resources must be harvested, transported, and combined to create the ships, and when those ships die in battle, they are gone forever. Over the course of the war, those ships have been dying by the thousands. Since the changes implemented in the last few months, the production chains, cost, and complexity of crafting most ships in EVE have become more complex and expensive, leading to a further burnout of already overtaxed industry players.

I am a socialist in almost every aspect in my life. I help organize, I promote worker rights, I don't ignore feminist and racial struggles. Yet when it comes to console exclusivity I transform into the complete opposite of everything I believe in. As an owner of a console, I enjoy exclusives and I hate it whenever an exclusive gets ported to PC. I know every game being on every piece of hardware especially PC is the right, moral, and "proletarian" choice, but I can't help but rage and denounce at the sight of any exclusive, even the ones from a different console, gets ported.

Maybe it's some residue PTSD from being in a tight-knit Demon's Souls community when I was younger, and seeing the community flooded by morons and petit-bougie assholes when the Souls series was ported to PC.

What do you guys think of console exclusivity?

A critique on modern game design

Modern games are boring as shit because the player has no reason to play the game. This sounds retarded but it's true, modern games are designed with an end goal, too many games are either multiplayer minigames or open world games where the world is filled with nothing and you have no sense as to what your supposed to do in those games, what ends up happening is the player either feels as if they're aimlessly moving a character in the game accomplishing quite frankly nothing or have already finished the game like in games like Alex legends or modern warfare and thus have 0 reason to open or play the game again as it's unlikely they'll find anything new or interesting to play. This lack of a purpose is one of the reasons as to why games since the late 2000s started seeing a noticeably declining quality in actual game design despite the fact that graphical technology has improved(of course if your willing to pay thousands just to run new releases at consistent frame rates than it's an improvement) and player dissatisfaction has risen to a point where ancientfags in gaming either have given up on new releases due to fears of wasting their money on a game that's gonna be shit and bug infested day 1. I blame world of warcraft for this trend as they made the belief that you can get players consistently spending on a game without a real purpose, and with it a bunch of new MMOs hoping to copy world of warcrafts success started launching all while making mistakes the developers of WOW had already came over during the 90s and early 2000s, suddenly the open world format would become an increasing normality with franchises like far cry and soon the world of modern gaming began to decay over a reason that could be fixed pretty easily. Oh well

Graphics dont matter

Theres no way to improve 3d models, textures or lighting anymore what matters are animations and physics along with art and game design these days, battlefield 2042 wont look better than bfv, bf3 hell maybe not even bad company 2 but what it can do to show it's an improvement is by implementing improvements to its physics engine to make the world feel more interactible and immersive like bf1

Minecraft Server

UPDATE

Server is up. Server IP is: 54.39.95.135

Server Name is: BunkerHell

MAKE SURE YOU LAUNCH MINECRAFT VIA THE CRACKPACK 3 MODPACK!
https://ufile.io/37ru6kdy
You should be able to download them, extract and plop them into MultiMC.

I'm going to have a shitton of free time over the next few months and I'm thinking about hosting a new Leftypol Minecraft server. Had some experience back in the day hosting factions based servers on the mindcrack modpack. I'm a little rusty but I should be able to pick it all up again reasonably fast.

Right now I'm leaning towards a factions based server (maybe with factions maybe based on lefty ideologies, or people could just sort themselves into teams or w/e) a tech-y modpack based on PVP and a limited mapsize - ideally a large, continent sized island with limited resources and with borders around it so there is some competition for resources (hopefully creating incentive for political alliances and conflict). I'll try to find a plugin which allows physical territory claiming/restricts harvesting of resources on non territory so expanding, building outposts, trade between factions and etc would be encouraged. Nuclear power, high-tech weapons/defense & industry mods are of course a must. Hardcore food/agriculture mods may also be added so there is a need to diversify agriculture/food production and encourage large teams.

I'm willing to put down the money for a decent server and can probably maintain it for a while, possibly indefinitely although that all depends on interest in the idea.

Who here would be interested in a set up like this? If I can get a dozen or so people interested at first I'm willing to put the money and time in ASAP, although obviously I'd be willing to invest more money/time if the playerbase is larger. Server will ofc be free, no pay to win/eshop garbage & ideally open to pirated copies.

The Next Cinematic Universe

>Squeenix and Disney have collaborated for decades now
>Kingdom Hearts is a massive franchise with something like 50 games that melds Final Fantasy and Disney movies together into one cohesive(?) whole
>Disney have utterly cocked up Star Wars
>Marvel seemingly in disarray after Infinity War
>Squeenix, like Marvel before it, is a large, profitable corporation with a large stable of characters and marketable franchises

My prediction is that as profits fall off from their Marvel products, Disney is going to seek out new mergers/acquisitions to improve their prospects. Squenix is a ripe property, which Disney will seek to exploit by purchasing and/or merging with ala Pixar, and then making a bunch of movies/series based on FF, and using SE's gaming clout to expand further into the extremely profitable world of gaming.

So I hope you're reading for the Kingdom Hearts cinematic universe, because it's fucking coming.

4X Games - Civ, Alpha Centauri, Shadow Empire

General for 4X games, but also an opportunity to introduce you all to a new game called Shadow Empire.

The game has an incredibly deep planet generation system that affects gameplay massively, including rotation of the planet (lol), makeup of the atmosphere, terrain, mineral deposits and alien life. It also has a logistics system to make you supply your units with food and ammunition, if they run out of supply they'll be very weak so you need to keep expanding the supply lines to the front and also making sure the enemy cannot cut you off. Obviously being encircled is very bad news for your troops.

You start as a minor "Regime" and your goal is to conquer the planet after the previous galaxy wide regime collapsed sending most of it into civil war and apocalypse. Each regime can be run differently and has different perks based on decisions you make throughout the game. For example if people start striking you can send in the army to deal with them (autocracy) or just pay them off (democracy), alternatively you can avoid the situation entirely by administrating the zones well, but that may lead to other troubles like a lack of credits for purchasing resources. You can run a mix of different systems so your decisions aren't set in stone for you but there are bonuses to always picking a certain method like unique units and stratagems, which are like ideological playing cards.

Descent: Freespace

If no one has played this great classic space sim from the golden age of pc gaming (90s to mid 2000s) you owe it a chance. Descent Freespace, including the silent threat expansion and the sequel, Descent Freespace 2, are arguably the greatest games ever created in the space sim genre.

This guy has a pretty good video series on the games:

Go/Baduk

Does anyone on /leftypol/ play Go? I am interested in learning how to play it, but I am not sure where to start. That said, I think I will start by reading "Learn How to Play Go" by Janice Kim (Reddit recommended it.). I attached it here to this thread for anyone interested.

Also, a quote from Deleuze, among other things of course, is what really piqued my interest in Go. I'll reproduce it here:

>“Let us take a limited example and compare the war machine and the state apparatus in the context of the theory of games. Let us take chess and Go, from the standpoint of game pieces, the relations between the pieces and the space involved. Chess is a game of the State, or of the court: the emperor of China played it. Chess pieces are coded; they have an internal nature and intrinsic properties from which their movements, situations, and confrontations derive. They have qualities; a knight remains a knight, a pawn a pawn, a bishop a bishop. Each is like a subject of the statement endowed with relative power, and these relative powers combine in a subject of enunciation, that is, the chess player or the game’s form of interiority. Go pieces, I contrast, are pellets, disks, simple arithmetic units, and have only an anonymous, collective, or third-person function: “It” makes a move. “It” could be a man, a woman, a louse, an elephant. Go pieces are elements of a nonsubjectified machine assemblage with no intrinsic properties, only situational ones. Thus the relations are very different in the two cases.

>Within their milieu of interiority, chess pieces entertain biunivocal relations with one another, and with the adversary’s pieces: their functioning is structural. One the other hand, a Go piece has only a milieu of exteriority, or extrinsic relations with nebulas or constellations, according to which it fulfills functions of insertion or situation, such as bordering, encircling, shattering. All by itself, a Go piece can destroy an entire constellation synchronically; a chess piece cannot (or can do so diachronically only). Chess is indeed a war, but an institutionalized, regulated, coded war with a front, a rear, battles. But what is proper to Go is war without battle lines, with neither confrontation nor retreat, without battles even: pure strategy, whereas chess is a semiology. Finally, the space is not at all the same: in chess, it is a question of arranging a closed space for oneself, thus going from one point to another, of occupying the maximum number of squares with the minimum number of pieces. In Go, it is a question of arraying oneself in an open space, of holding space, of maintaining the possibility of springing up at any point: the movement is not from one point to another, but becomes perpetual, without aim or destination, without departure or arrival. The “smooth” space of Go, as against the “striated” space of chess. The nomos of Go against the State of chess, nomos against polis. The difference is that chess codes and decodes space, whereas Go proceeds altogether differently, territorializing and deterritorializing it (make the outside a territory in space; consolidate that territory by the construction of a second, adjacent territory; deterritorialize the enemy by shattering his territory from within; deterritorialize oneself by renouncing, by going elsewhere…) Another justice, another movement, another space-time.”

the long war mod for xcom 2012 doesn't make much sense.
Xcom like all games has a snowball effect, and the rest of the difficulty tweaking is in contradiction with this.
What would make sense is for more wins to lead to a faster increase in difficulty and a shorter game overall, since you're progressing through the challenge at a quicker pace. Then if you fuck up and lose a mission or some soldiers, the penalty is having to play more game, and its not a campaign ending setback like it is now(at least on the higher difficulties).

I don't expect many to know what im talking about. I had this thought in my head from when long war was still played 6 years ago, before xcom2.

Let's design an indie game together

Hey, I thought about making this game for a while. Usually I have these random ideas and try to put them together. I'm more of a vision and feelings oriented guy. Problem is I'm lacking an idea to give the player some grand "Aha!" moment. You know what I mean if you've played a good game before.

Anyways, so this game is about capitalism. It's supposed to be a small open world game with PS1 graphics. Your character is a random nobody. Their specific identity is of no importance. The game starts off with leading you on the path that you have to find a job and get money to make something out of yourself. You are soon confronted that the kind of jobs you like are unavailable to you, because they have ludicrous demands for junior positions and the other jobs are undignified menial jobs that will hardly give you enough money for you to make it out of poverty. The idea is to make the player believe that's what they should do and the player is made unaware of the fact that he could play the game very differently at any time. The player looks for job and he replays these boring minigames, that represent his menial job, over and over and over again. The player is free to continue and perhaps at some point they will realize they can go about things differently. In the meantime the world building will inform about the conflicts and problems around him. Politicians making promises on stage, crime on the streets, some people ridiculously rich and others pathetically poor and factions slowly brewing in society of which the player can actually join. The player will be subject to random tragic events, like getting hit by a car and having astronomical bills to pay, getting mugged on the street (by a minority and yes that is an important), yada yada. Those inevitable events are supposed to make the player realize that working to fulfill whatever goals they had will not be possible. Because they will never earn enough money. This is when the second phase of the game starts. The player will now explore alternative ways of going about things and come into contact with various factions which will mimic real life factions we see in contemporary politics. These factions must be depicted with a genuine attempt at portraying them honestly, because if we are too on the nose with "HURR DURR WE STUPID NAZIS AND WE DUMB DUMBS BELIEVE JEWS ARE BEHIND EVERYTHING" or "HURR WE ARE DUMB SJWS DUMB DUMBS WHO THINK QUOTAS CAN SOLVE EVERYTHING" people who actually identify with these groups will feel unfairly misrepresented and not listen to the game's core message. The player may choose any of these factions and lead them to their own victory which will be followed by their miserable failure, since their worldview was misguided. The proper ending will be achieved by joining the socialist faction that unites all of the other factions. Anyways. I have this scene in my head how the player will sneak into some politicians home where they throw a big party and all the other important figures are invited. They will all look like pigs and make squeeling noises when they speak. They will talk about how they are using all of these factions as pawns to keep them divided and fighting with each other. They are also getting served human flesh and the player can find a stash of corpses in a cold room in the kitchen. It's supposed to be a metaphor how human suffering and pain is their sustenance.

Do you guys want to give me some feedback? Add some ideas? Anyone interested in working on that with me?

The importance of games in politics

For years and years the debate has raged over whether video games qualify as art, and as ridiculous as that debate is there's one undeniable aspect of it: video games have ideological content.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TycfDgg4acY

For that reason this thread should be used to approach games from a political standpoint with their political content in mind. The only thing to keep in mind here is that YOU CANNOT TALK ABOUT GAMERGATE.

Here's a big list of video games with left wing content to help discussion get going:

Chess

I'm making this thread here, because the other boards are practically dead. If a mod chooses to move it to /hobby/, that's cool, I just wanted some exposure on /leftypol/.

As you might now, chess played a large role in the Soviet Union. They outright dominated the game for decades and it was commonly played ever since the inception of the union.

I think chess does possess the potential to develop and train the strategic thinking skills of players, if they abstract from the game and attempt to apply it to the real world.

But it's also a fun game. Because of that I made a /leftypol/ club on chess.com, which is a great website with a nice UI and plenty of resources to learn and improve at chess. I've been using it for months now and got far better at chess and I even do the puzzles on it for fun every day. The way the website is designed makes learning chess and improving really, really easy. Making an account is free and would be quick. I know this sounded like an ad, lol.

So, I'm inviting you comrades to start learning chess or improve whatever skill level you are at and join the /leftypol/ chess club. We could play against each other. Perhaps even organize tournaments. I think it would be really cool if we could get something like this going and make it the community wide hobby. If only 3 people join that would be good enough honestly.

Anyone else doesn't like the graphical remakes (like DS, Halo, Shadow of the Collosus, Spyro, etc)? Them graphics look good but it's also done by a completely different team. It's like if they took a movie and reshot it exactly the same but with different actors and new effects. Or if someone redrew mona lisa and now it's supposed to be considered the best version. It results in a different feel and fucked up art style. And yet gamers seem to eat this shit up and ask for more. Am I alone on this?

Dutch Van Der Linde

Was he based? It seems like he was a flawed individual that did his best until he went mad. By the time of RDR2 the gang was already well past it's prime. To me Hosea seemed more so the wise one of the two. Sure Arthur understood the Pinkertons were pawns of the capitalists. Nonetheless he still thought the gang were the bad guys, maybe worse than the capitalists. He particularly despised the usury practices of Strauss and Micah's killing of innocents but went along anyways. There's also the influence the fictional writer Evelyn Miller had on Dutch's supposed ideology. Funny enough Miller admits he's an urbanite hack in side missions and ends up killing himself in the last one. The anti-civilization ideology Arthur and i assume Dutch hold is hardly expanded upon but I'm sure there's real world examples of the era the developers drew from. Despite this their gang seems to be the most civilized out of the enemy ones encountered in the game. So what's the conclusion? Was he just a caricature of leftism the same way Reyes was in the first game or something else?

Once I was in highschool (around 2016-2018), I played a game that had sophisticated music & vibe like this Warplane inc. But I forgot the name.

The game was just flying & entering circles. Like a casual game. The era was set in WW1. So the protagonist (he's a young commoner Anglo) has a crush with a Kraut lady (she's a part of royal family in Fritz empire).

They both wrote & sent a letter each others until the war is started, they begin to stay away each others. The protagonist then been drafted into airforce to fight the Fritz.

Any similar warplane mobile game story like this?

Improvements of the N-Sane Trilogy as per Crashmania:
>All games have auto-saving now. You don't need to beat Tawna's bonus rounds in the first game to save, since the game unobtrusively does that for you every time you beat a level or reach a checkpoint.
>The Dynamic Difficulty Adjustment from Crash 2 and WARPED was added to the first game. Taking notes from the sequels, the first game now gives you extra masks if you die too many times before reaching a checkpoint, then replaces certain crates with checkpoints if you're still having trouble. Boulders will also slow down if you're having trouble outrunning them, like in the second game.
>The floor in Toxic Waste now has marks where the bouncing barrels will hit, making it much easier to position yourself accordingly.
>Chase levels in the second game have a trail of green squares before each dash pad so you'll know when you're approaching them.
>A bird can be seen flying into the alien sign post in Road Crash. This is a hint on how to reach the level Hot Coco.
>Some bosses get cartoony symbols over them when they're vulnerable to let you know it's safe to attack them.
>An aiming reticle was added to biplane levels.
>Biplanes no longer snap back to a position parallel to the ground. You can also slow down using the Circle button.
>Extra fruits have been added as hints above invisible platforms in the first game and after you hit the switch in Up The Creek.
>TNTs always explode nearby crates regardless of Crash's distance.
>Many precarious platforms now telegraph when they're about to fall down.
>The bounce crate behavior from WARPED was applied to the first two games, so you always get two fruits per bounce.
>It's easier to spin an enemy into a specific direction.

Mindustry

Finally got around to playing this recently and I love it. It's basically a cross between tower defense (in singleplayer anyway) and a management game. It basically addresses all the disappointments and frustrations I've had with Factorio over the years in its failure to progress its game development. PvP is a unique sort of RTS where the emphasis is on who can manufacture the best defenses and armies to overwhelm the other player. What does anon think about Mindustry?

Halo doesn't have enough ammo pouches, with the absurd amount of bullets he carries around, he even has ammo for guns he's not currently using. Come on. I'm not playing infinite if the combat doesn't actually evolve. Increasing polycount and raytracing isn't important, this isn't a movie.

I can't stop playing this game. I don't mean that I play it for hours or days non-stop, I mean it is the only game I play when I do play. I really liked Post Scriptum, and even Verdun. But for some reason it doesn't have the appeal of playing the same fucking maps for the nth time. Maybe because the other games are realistic simulations, where the enemy is some unknown shape in the distance, much like in real life; while counter strike is a game where you play against other people directly. There's a lot of psychology involved, and reading the other team, or predicting where someone will be, sneaking there and waiting for them. Because you knew they were gonna go around that corner. Not intuition, because you trained and learned, like a rat in a maze. Yet give the option of a wide map and relative freedom with nearly fifty people on each side vs a small, tight course, 5v5 and damn the latter is way more fun.

Thank you for reading my blog. Let's play some csgo sometime

dark souls can't into shakespeare

What the fuck is going on with the localization for this game? Have any of these writers even actually read early modern English? You can't just stick "thee" or "thou" anywhere in a sentence. They have actual, specific grammatical functions and can't be interchanged randomly. "Thou" is always the subject of a sentence. "Thee" is always the object. "Thine" is possessive. It's honestly really embarrassing that this dumb brain shit is present in a game this big. I know you don't play the game for the dialogue but this is incredibly simple basic shit.

>When we develop a new Resident Evil game, our goal is not always to make it scarier than the previous title, but find a balance to deliver a scary but fun experience for players, he said.

capitalism mod

What about a mod of minecraft in which you relive eastern european history. So you begin like normally, then you find a village, if you make a certain advancement, or create certain tool to grow crops more efficiently, then you get to take villagers as slaves, but you can only do it by subjugating other villages, so that when you eventually run out of villages nearby then you can simply take them as serfs. then you implement a trading system like the one there is now, but make it so that after becoming masters some villagers become teachers of their craft and teach it to other villagers, and then make it so that at a certain point it becomes more profitable for the player to trade with these, and he becomes compeled to drive away serf villagers, and create capitalism.
Think about it, it could be made really naturally too, you would need to add a system so that you could fight a villager to subjugate him, and make him grow crops, and if he happens to be from your village you can only make him give you a quota of grain, but if he is from another village, then you are allowed to make him give you everything. so that the first one will be more profitable at the beggining, but as you get better tools, then they become more equalised, and you are incentivised to take serfs instead, and then when they are serfs you have to physically fight them to take them out of their land

The PS5 pack in (Astro's Playroom) taps into PlayStation nostalgia while Sony didn't even give Vita developers advance warning in the closing of the Vita store this summer with some developers having to scrap their projects as they can't get it out in time.
It is like Sony hates its fans for still loving their old hardware, wanting them to only care about (and develop for) the PS5. Hell Sony's head of marketing (Jim Ryan) in 2017 basically said the PS2 was too old for anyone to really want to play anymore thus why Sony had no plans for backwards compatibility despite even the PS4 having the processing power to do PS2 software emulation at full speed with up scaling let alone the PS5.

Collapse: A Political Simulator

Made by our favorite game developers, Kremlingames, the game will have you take on managing your own fictional country (called "Republic") right after the aftermath of the collapse of the Soviet Union between 1992 and 2004. Diverting from the previous games' path, you will play not as the country's president, but as the leader of a party of your choosing. This means that you will be able to play as the opposition for the first time in a Kremlingames product.

You will get to shape the personality, sex and background of your party's leader as well as to be able to choose between seven different parties:
>the liberals
>the conservatives
>the social-democrats
>the "socialists"
>the communists
>the nazbols
>the fascists
Each of these parties are then divided between three different factions vying for power. You can go for a reformist or revolutionary path as the communists.
There are many other features, such as interactions with foreign powers, regional separatism, international integration, etc… I'm pretty intrigued by it tbh, I hope it won't be as hard and save-scummy as their previous games. It seems to be a better version of what Suzerain aims to be.

The game will release on tuesday the 23th.

Speedrunning.

I feel as if despite the fact that speedrunning is so popular nowadays, it seems like at the end of the day, there really isn't much skills that you really gained from it, nor did you really artistically influence the game in a way that minecraft building creators, or whatever would have achieved. I mean there is playing a whole variety of games, or just trying to see as much of a game that you can enjoy for yourself but it seems to me that speedrunning feels kind of hollow in a lot of ways to me. It's just doing the same shit over and over again for little benefit. At least with exercise, you gain muscular strength, but what is the light at the end of the tunnel for speedrunners?

Lost and Found Games Edition

For all those oldie goldies, cartridges, CDs, and games that you remember but have since been lost to planned redundancy, discontinued product lines, sites being shut down, just generally losing it, or you only caught a glimpse of it before it was swept away and now are seeking it again. AKA you want a game found that you can no longer get or one you kinda only vaguely remember and need help finding the SAUCE.

I'll start it off: Before the 2012 remake there was a fan made version of XCOM; it had mid 2000s 3D top down graphics, was more grounded in irl military equipment in terms of looks and effects, entirely free, and was rebranded as something else which I have entirely forgotten and why I need help finding it since these days searching for "Xcom fan game" usually nets all the spinoffs since the 2012 remake(which is kinda garbo in my opinion) or Xenonauts. So does anyone know which game I'm talking about? I remember it was very oversaturated with the colour green if that's any help at all.

Simulation Wargames (tabletop or otherwise)

This seems like a good topic for a /leftypol/ gaming thread since it is both autistic gaming discussion and actually has potential for a leftist development of strategy.

Maybe this would ideally be better suited for /hobby/ but as long as /games/ is more active seems sensible to just post anything related to games in any form here, like the chess thread or other tabletop.

I've recently been interested in the kind of "wargames" (broadly meaning military/political/strategic/policy simulation) that militaries, intelligence agencies, and consultant groups use to strategize and troubleshoot their plans. Personally this is interesting as far as I enjoy playing and designing strategy games. More generally, this seems like a good investment of time for leftists who are nerds who enjoy this shit anyway because it is a way to attempt to apply "gaming" to actual strategic considerations.

The best publicly available version of this I've seen that is also utilized by the aforementioned groups is Matrix Games, which is a very rules-lite and scaleable model that tries to remove constraining gameplay meta in favor of players debating what is within reason and what is not. Whether this makes for the most "fun" gameplay possible is besides the point, because the idea is to use the tabletop wargame format to explore the widest range of strategic possibilities, and establishing in-game advantages and victories based on serious discussion of what would be concievable under the given circumstances seems to be a good way to encourage thinking outside the box and considering various angles.

http://www.mapsymbs.com/wdmatrix.html#what

Some abbreviated info from the website:

<What are Matrix Games?

>Matrix games are different to normal Wargames and Role-Playing games. In a these games you compare lists of statistics and peer at complicated books of rules containing someone else's idea about what things are important, before rolling a dice. It takes a long time and can be very difficult to explain to a newcomer. Instead, in a Matrix Game you simply use words to describe why something should happen, the Umpire decides how likely it is, and you roll a dice. If you can say "This happens, for the following reasons…" you can play a Matrix Game.

<Game Arguments

>In a Matrix Game, actions are resolved by a structured sequence of logical "arguments". Each player takes turns to make an argument, with successful arguments advancing the game, and the player's position. There are a number of ways you can do this and each has their own strengths and weaknesses.

<Notes about Arguments

>The important thing to remember in a Matrix game is that Arguments can be made about anything that is relevant to the scenario. You can argue about your own personnel or about the enemy, the existence of people, places, things or events, the political leadership back home, the weather, plague, disease, public opinion, and you can even argue for changes in whatever rules you are using. With a bit of imagination, common sense and rational thinking, it is possible to present persuasive arguments as to what should happen in any scenario.
>When an Argument succeeds it remains in effect until another Argument stops it. This means that if you are Napoleon and succeed in Arguing that you march on Moscow, you will continue to move forward, every turn, until you get there - unless of course someone argues that you don't…

The Matrix Games website has some popular premade scenarios: http://www.mapsymbs.com/wdmatrix1.html

I'm still totally unsure about the actual details of play and potential variations, is anybody familiar with this kind of thing?

Are there any other kinds of wargames that serve as good strategic simulations that you know of/would recommend?

Whether they're "professional", tabletop, vidya, whatever I'm mostly just curious about games like this that (taking for granted that perfect "authenticity" isn't ever going to be possible) at least provide a strong basis for a meaningful familiarity with serious strategic considerations. It seems like reactionaries and too many leftists are satisfied with pretending that shit like paradox games or milsim shooters or w/e are representative of reality in any way and that there's no other way to engage with strategic hypotheticals outside of these products designed for consumption within strict ideological assumptions, while the world's powerful interests are using "game" tools that the dissident political milieus are probably more familiar with but completely ignore.

Let's talk about how we can fix that.

GETchan VN collaboration project

So our idea was as follows (as I understand what we discussed)

We want to make a VN in Ren'py because the software/coding is pretty easy.

moo_moo knows how to code python for the backend
hardkoba does nice sexy art for the characters
spurdo does 3d and 2d works and can possibly do the backgrounds and/or other design elements
caballo is a writer and can write the novel bit
pepe_pp does writing and some art and can assist with those
moo_moo also does music (electronic) so can handle that

Other people may want to contribute with their skills of course.

Plot concept:
Main character lives in present day Earth sadly because capitalism and the ongoing social collapse sucks.
He possibly idly signs some form agreeing to be part of some preservation experiment if he dies.
He then dies shortly afterward, either through suicide or through random accident/calamity
MC's brain is stored in a 'science chamber' (or whatever) at a university for research, either because he signed the forms or because he is special in some other way and was picked out. Eventually, his brain simply becomes a display piece/teaching aid for med students.
30-50 years later, the climate crisis comes to a head and capitalist society is destroyed due to resource shortages, wars, et cetera, some years later, the people take power globally and start the work of rebuilding society along communist lines.
150-200 years after our story starts, a team of scientists decides to use MC's brain in an experiment to attempt to resurrect him, possibly they have tried previously and his is the first time it has worked, or the project has never been tried before but a mad scientist at the university decides to try it on a whim with MC's brain.
After some time, MC's body is regrown and he awakes in a brave new world, with the last thing he remembers having been his death.
He is dazed and confused at first for obvious reasons and does not really know if he's alive or dead. Of course he is told what had happened but doesn't quite understand/believe it.
Eventually MC is up and moving around, and he is shown the brave new world by, most likely, the love interests.
The utopian abundance of the world actually convinces him moreso that he has gone to heaven/'the good place' and that nothing is really real.
That's really as far as we got, but MC has to deal with existential crises like whether anything is real, whether he is even the same person as the one he remembers being (due to consciousness stopping, etc), whether he fits in in this world and if he should have even been resurrected to begin with, and so on.

The world:
The world should be utopian communism, but will probably not call itself that due to entryism and not wanting to immediately put people off. MC will be amazed by the freedom and choice that people have, the lack of money, the fact that anyone can do basically whatever they want (within reason), and is both in awe and deeply alienated by the new society.
MC also finds it hard to fit in because social conventions have changed drastically, with people generally being much more communal, having more loose ideas of who owns what and sharing, people being more sexually open and less private in general, the commonness of polygamy, orgies, et cetera, and the lack of (as he sees it) personal boundaries and so on.
We have come to an impasse about the appearances of the people that surround MC. Some of us believe that it would be a society of largely mixed race, healthy and generally attractive looking people who put less emphasis on appearance due to the fact that appearances can be relatively easily changes/corrected/modified.
Others would prefer a world of diversity and sexual 'novelty' where people's bodies have been extensively modified to fit their personalities, with the physical form being a representation of the internal mind. People would be diverse, strange, and some would be transhuman (ie. possibly furries, elves, catgirls, or even more exotic thing). So, I guess we have to decide on that.

We also agreed that ideally the MC should be gender flexible (he/she/they) to player choice, but I have used he for simplicity.
Sex scenes would be enabled in the game put able to be disabled/skipped like many other VNs.
Ideally, there should be femboys in the game as romance options as well as women.

Anyways, I might have forgotten some things, but that's about as far as we got, I believe. Let's hope we stick with it and the project isn't just an idle idea that is thrown into the ether and forgotten!

Inspirations:
Everlasting Summer (commie imageboard VN with time travel elements)
Looking Backward 1887-2000 by Edward Bellamy (book where person wakes up century later into communism, comes to see it as a utopia, and gets a cute waifu to go along with it, as a comment on the society the author lived in).

Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead.

Hi /games/. I'm looking for a few volunteers to create a leftist post-apocalyptic community in C:DDA both to discount the Hobbesian idea of war of all against all and show that humans are communal creatures as well as showcasing leftist ideas to a large, international group of gamers.

No Technological Experience or Knowledge is required, mostly just an active imagination, possibly some writing and an interest in having real leftist examples in video games.

If you do not currently play c:dda but would like to understand the other factions that currently exist in the game, read:
https://cataclysmdda.org/design-doc/#world

It's important to mention that the two currently most developed factions are a capitalist one which broadly speaking are free market capitalists, with some just wanting to make money whilst others are pure 'right libertarian' ideologues. The second being a faction which is the remnants of the old american state and seeks to unite the US back into the old USA. Patriots, Generals, beurocrtats, basically govt people and there patriot supporters.. rumored to have a good portion of the US fleet still active and just off-shore of somewhere preparing for a ground offensive.
.
These two groups are allies. This is significant as it allows for conflict with leftist organization and as we know Conflict Drives Plot.

Let's Get Shit Done, anons!

Games which demand absolute mastery

Something I really respect about this game is that it makes the player squeeze absolutely every little bit of advantage out of its mechanics not just to master the game, but to beat the game at all. From the fact that changing ship speeds damages enemies from your ship exhaust, to contact damage from your gun pods, and even to crashing your ship into large enemies for massive damage at the cost of a power-up because they can't be defeated fast enough any other way, every little bit of mastery of this game's mechanics is required to successfully defeat its brutal second loop and win the game. A lot of games have massive depth that rewards advanced players, but very few of them require diving deep in order to win because the stage design requires it. Are there any other games that do this?

What the fuck is this shit?

Just played the first 30 mins or so, I guess I made my own bed by buying this game as one of apparently the few people that liked 'action Resident Evil', which this is I guess a repudiation of, but it's the most hackneyed cliche shit. Wandering around a boring shithole at a snail's pace with random noises that you know won't mean anything, seeing generic gross/creepy things, then characters disappearing into nothingness the second you look away at a speed that you KNOW is impossible and is just utter cliche horror shit, everything is paint by the numbers utterly. And yeah, 'it's scary', I guess so, but I also expected a game, not just the game equivalent of a trashy horror flick. Clearly I shouldn't have bought this game but I feel I was misled by the hordes of people saying how amazing this is.

Vidya music with dissonance

A game music thread with a twist. It occurs to me that I don't encounter music like this too often in games, but it's really cool when it's done well. Looking for vidya music that creates a sense of dread and uneasiness, that stresses the player out and adds to the tenseness of a particular level or area in which it plays.

Yooka Laylee is revolutionary art

Yooka the chameleon and Laylee the bat are sunbathing and enjoying life's simple pleasures when their pristine afternoon is ruined by the capitalist expropriation of the One Book - a tome which contains the power to write history. It is expropriated from Yooka and Laylee by Dr Quack, the right hand man of the game's antagonist bourgeois bee, Capital B. This sets into motion the story that will lead Yooka and Laylee, who represent the peasants and workers respectively, to attempt to topple Capital B(ourgoisie).

The capitalist expropriation of their book leads our proletarian heroes to leave their pirate-ship home in search of their class enemy. The pirate ship suggests an unrealized anticapitalist conciousness in our heroes that exists before they are given the revolutionary impetus at the game's beginning. As our heroes approach the enemy's lair, Hivory Towers, they are exposed to the incredible environmental destruction caused by capital B in the search of profits. The entire landscape is covered in toxic waste. A result of the subordination of scientists like Dr. Quack to the will of the bourgeoisie.

Unlike most collect-a-thon games, Yooka Laylee does not feature coins or other capitalist fetishes as collectables. Instead, our heroes collect writing quills and pages - useful articles which represent the accumulation of knowledge and revolutionary theory by the proletariat to make possible their ultimate conflict with the bourgeoisie. The expansion of Yooka and Laylee's knowledge is greatly assisted by the strategic alliance with Trowzer Snake, who represents the petty bourgeoisie and it's historical origin in patriarchal property relations.

The symbolism in this game goes down to the details. For example, the 'corplet security' sentinal robot enemy is modled after Microsoft's Kinect camera. The studio that produced yooka laylee is staffed by former employees of Rare games, which was purchased by microsoft and forced to produce Kinect shovelware games, instead of artistically valuable ones.

Over all, I reccomend this game to all proletarian gamers.

After Action Report

Not a thread about a specific game as such but more a general concept - After Action Reports don't have a definite origin but they were popularized heavily by turn-based grand strategy games like the old Total War games, Civilization, some RTS games like Command and Conquer, and many tabletop games like Warhammer 40k.

The general premise is that you take the game session you played and turn it into a narrative experience meant to be read by people who hadn't experienced the campaign - stylized like a military document of sorts meant to relay the events during towards higher ups. However for this thread I think the definition should be expanded a bit to more encompass just any narrative retelling of a game experience, either single or multi-parted for any game that you think can manage it.

F2P Combat Autism Games

Hello everyone, after some serious temptation due to watching various militaria channels for some months I think I'm gonna finally jump on the bandwagon and try WT/WoT. Does anyone have experience with these kind of games? How badly exactly am I gonna get fucked by premium/longtime players?

I did some searches and it seems most people agree that WT is much more realistic and simulator-y than WoT which is good cause I'd like to try realism. So, that's the one I'm downloading right now, but does anyone else have a different opinion on it?

In addition, I know there's probably a huge amount of affiliate new member deals out there but does anyone know what one is the best I can use currently, ideally linked to a good YT channel that deserves it? If not I can just search for it but hey.

General advice for getting started (or why I shouldn't)?

Post Scriptum

Immersive WWII squad combat simulator. 80 people on a server, 40 a side, although they are talking about expanding it to a 100. There's no ranks, skins, microtransactions, or any of that bullshit. At the end of the game you just see your own stats, and four MVPs and that's it. Onto the next one. It's exciting as fuck and if you're not careful it eats your time. It is made with the Unreal engine and I am told it is very similar to Squad, which I haven't played.

The game has several game modes, but the most popular one is offensive. Where you capture enemy objectives by taking over the point. The maps and locations are as true to history as they can be, they re-created the locations from maps, aerial photos from the time, stuff like that. Weapons available are the ones available to that side at that battle. And yes, there are tanks. You can play as the Wehrmacht, Waffen-SS, US airborne, British airborne or French infantry (in 1940 iirc).

It's a real team game and communication and cooperation are necessary. You have a squad leader who commands his squad of 9 people, who can be riflemen, medic, light and heavy machine gunner, mortar, AT, sapper, radio, with the special classes divided among the squads. There are also armored squads, for driving tanks, because you need 2-3 people to operate a tank. There are also logistic squads, who have to set up forward operating bases, vehicle repair stations, supply stations, defenses, mortars, etc. The maps are huge, and you get a sense of a battle on a large scale.

Only downside is that the team developing it said they don't have enough money to add the Eastern Front battles to the game. But they have had modding only since December 2020, so probably in the future we can expect that someone will make some Eastern Front maps.

Do any of you play? I think it would be cool to get a leftist clan going in this game.

Gamers' contradictory attitude towards piracy and copyright

What could we do to push people like this to realize that just whining at a massive corporation is not going to fundamentally change anything, and that the problem is the system? I'm tired of hearing the same "look, I'm not promoting copyright infringement, but I also hate what this powerful company who is the copyright holder does to fan projects/its own games…" and other such cop-outs. Sounds like cuckoldry to me.

Maybe the first step is to promote the idea of changing copyright laws so that big businesses can't fuck people over as much, instead of allowing consoomers to try to defend fan projects/piracy and cucking out to copyright law designed to protect the rich at the same time. Maybe some already realize this, but I think the majority hasn't even thought that in this case, the problem is not the company who is unwilling to be nice and ignore the law to cooperate with fans, the problem is the laws (and system, of course, but they're not ready for that yet) that allow "anti-consoomer" companies to force their own rules onto those fans whenever and however they want, and it's hypocritical to simultaneously support such illegal activities and copyright law. They definitely already understand that corporations are not their friend and just want to make as much money as possible, gamers only need that little push towards real action.

From there, we could start promoting criticism towards the system itself, little by little. Hopefully, they would end up realizing that the issues in the videogame industry such as overpriced pieces of plastic or overpriced and limited re-releases of old unoptimized software are never going to be solved by reforming the company's policy or capitalism, that the implications are much more bigger than they ever imagined, that capitalism is not a universal and unchangeable state of affairs that we just have to accept and deal with, and that there exists a viable alternative to it which we could help bring about.

Hi /Games/. Tired of being the same kind of talky-talk board? Want to be a Get Shit Done Board like the imageboards of yore?

Why not help in creating a leftist post-apocalyptic community for Catacylsm:DDA, a singleplayer roguelike-like survival game? It could act as propaganda, that is to say nothing obvious and not just having the communists as the good guys but that could leave players walking away thinking 'huh, maybe some of my ideas about leftism/communism were wrong/unfounded.'

You don't need any knwoledge to help, just your ideas and a willingness to learn simple markup ( JSON ) if you would like to write data.

Mostly right now I am looking for Lore, how the group came together, interesting leftist characters, backstories, mission ideas, anything.

obviously we will have to add our mascot as a character so what kind of stats and proficiencies would Alunya have? If she cannot have cat ears what would be next best thing? Wolfs?

Rampant Creative Bankruptcy

So according to the surveillance programs of the company "Overwolf", these are the 20 most popular games as of July 2020 (I will be also listing their approximate genre/subgenre):

>1. League of Legends

>moba
&lt2. Tomy Clancy's Rainbow Six: Siege
&ltteam-based tactical shooter
>3. Valorant
>team based tactical shooter with moba characteristics
&lt4. Minecraft
&ltbasically Minecraft
>5. Counter Strike: Global Offensive
>tactical shooter
&lt6. Grand Theft Auto V
&ltopen world shooter, also pretty much the only singleplayer game here
>7. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
>basically CoD
&lt8. Overwatch
&ltteam based shooter with moba characteristics
>9. Apex Legends
>battle royale
&lt10. PLAYERUNKOWN'S BATTLEGROUNDS
&ltbattle royale
>11. Hearthstone
>cardgame
&lt12. Dota 2
&ltmoba
>13. Fortnite
>battle royale
&lt14. Roblox
&ltuhhhm… roblox
>15. Hyper Scape
>battle royale
&lt16. World of Warcraft
&ltmmorpg
>17. osu!
>rhythm game
&lt18. The Escapists 2.
&ltcoop strategy rpg
>19. Monster Hunter: World
>open world coop action rpg
&lt20. Legends of Runeterra
&ltcard game

Now let's see how many of these genres were started by games which were produced in a communist manner, ie. free of charge.

>MOBA

>its first title is DotA, originally a Warcraft 3 mod

>tactical shooter

>its first title is Counter Strike, originally a Half-Life mod

>team-based shooter

>its first title is the Quake mod Team Fortress

>Minecraft

>basically a copy of the open-source game Infiniminer which never got made or updated for commercial reasons

>battle royale

>it's first title is DayZ, an Arma 3 mod

>honorable mention: osu!

>while the game itself is open source, it's also commercially used and the concept comes from japanese arcade games

This covers the 5 most popular and 11 out of the 20 most popular games. I am honestly starting to pity porky. He has an enormous headstart not just in terms of general motivating power (money), but also in terms of manpower, and he still can't dominate the market. Feel free to correct me on any of the points made, also anyone making an infograph out of this would appriciated, I have to go to sleep.

Discuss.

What faction would a principled Marxist side with in Fallout: New Vegas?

I though about starting this thread in /hobby/, but considering I'm not interested in talking about the merits of the game-itself, and rather to discuss the specific dilemma of factions, I thought I'd get a more focused discussion here.

The Wildcard ending notwithstanding, there are principally three different factions in the game you can side with: Caesar's Legion, New California Republic, and Mr. House. To begin, Caesar's Legion is a fascist power lead by a historical materialist (even though the writers somewhat misrepresent Hegel in their dialogue about the dialectic, the general theme is maintained) most players misunderstand Caesar as just a LARPer rather than someone who is genuinely trying to restart history. His Legion, is admittedly a hegemonic autocracy that Caesar intends to use to subjugate humanity under one banner, so that their collective progress would be accelerated. It's entirely possible to interpret Caesar as just history's janitor trying to send humanity back through the motions and antiquity to try and reach a better result than rushing back to the "good ol' days" like the NCR, rather than someone who takes pleasure in creating a slave society that is an objectively malignant entity.

The NCR is presented as the return of the old Bourgeois Dictatorship of the US, their government is a corrupt expansionist bureaucracy that can only adequately administrate war, meanwhile the actual body of the legislation itself has a lineage of benevolent autocrats (tandy) and is ruled by the interest of the "brahmin barons" (kulaks), this is a critique that Caesar presents in his analysis of the NCR (which happens to sound out-of-context Marxian). Caesar correctly identifies the NCR as a reincarnation of the failed Bourgeois state that brought about the very predicament of the wasteland, and seeks to use them as his component in creating a society apt enough to the material conditions of the wasteland.

The strangest character in this dynamic is Mr. House, if the NCR is a light veil for a Bourg dictatorship, then Mr. House is an open window, making no illusions to the player about his proposed autocratic status and ex-Bourg origin. Since the wasteland cannot be considered Capitalist (as a true economic analysis of the Fallout universe would lack too many necessary factors to be accurate) we have to assume that the wastes can be best surmised as a scavenger-economy wherein the most valuable resource is electricity and armaments, the wasteland does still have capitalistic elements (the barons of the NCR being a good example, as well as Crimson Caravan and Gunrunners) but lacks the infrastructure to maintain a conventionally capitalist society (and thereby is also incapable of creating a socialist society unless material conditions change).

I'd propose that due to this, the best choice for a Marxist in the wasteland is to side with whichever faction has the best capacity to create industry in the wasteland. All the factions in the maingame (and characters in the DLC hint at this theme, but would take to long to discuss) are representations of differing ideological states: the NCR being a bourgeois dictatorship under the farce of democracy, the Legion being a fascist army with the goals (at least the goals of Caesar) of restarting humanity's cultural progress, and Mr. House who breaks the mold as an autocratic Technocrat. You might refer to House as the supreme corporatist, but he's likely the only one possessing of the ability to either industrialize the wasteland or to simply leave Earth behind for Mars, despite being the most comically capitalist entity in Fallout (a series that from inception was an inherent critique of Nationalist Capitalism), House is likely the best choice for a principled Marxist, the NCR would lead humanity into a similar state of global capitalism, it too perhaps has the capacity to industrialize the wastes like Mr. House (and in face House intends to use them largely for a similar purpose) but Mr. House presents perhaps and easier path, because House is a planned economist, regardless of all the old-world business aesthetic, House is someone who would be a literal computer-god who plans the economy. House claims to be an objective ruler with a more important grand vision than say the short-term emulators of the NCR, who despite their uses to him, House rejects as the planners of the economy (potentially because he recognizes like Caesar, their inherent contradictions). In any event of House winning, the inevitable desire of the Marxist Courier would be to have him killed or deposed, I left out Yesman in this little essay because I thought that would be to filled with assumptions to really consider, because of course the obvious answer would be "courier and yes man takes over and the Comrade Courier uses Yesman to create an epic planned economy, Communism 100." A ending which to me seems really silly to rationalize in the context of the setting, to be clear, I don't think F:NV has any Marxist faction or even a Marxian theme, it's themes are focused around nostalgic ideology and the Gnostic need to either destroy the past or worship it. To the end of advancing the Fallout Universe to the next stage of history, I think Mr. House is the only one who even has the capacity to achieve it, even if he's a terrifying computer God who could only be removed by his "employees" in the most idealized scenario.

As Benny puts it: "Mr House hides Vegas under his skirt when the bombs drop so it's his? forever?" not that Benny is a proletarian revolutionary or anything, but a Mr. House ending would require that House be willing to take on proteges or somehow put himself in a position to be removed, but since that's a question more of game mechanics than narrative, I'll ignore it. Am I wrong? Who do you think a Marxist should choose?

/leftypol/ in the 4chan Cup /pol/eague

/leftypol/ has gotten to the finals of the most recent poleague!

https://implyingrigged.info/wiki//leftypol/

However, this team is actually run and controlled by ULP… The poleague has asked us however if we would be interested in either joining together with ULP (if they agree) to manage the team, or possibly just creating a separate team of our own. However, none of the mods can really take on the responsibility right now, so is there anyone else who is interested in being involved with this? ULP's team is pretty cool, they have custom models, custom music, and all sorts, so there's definitely a lot of scope to experiment with the engine (blender models can be imported into the game).

Thanks for your attention!

Whats the hottest take in vidyogames
R: 7 / I: 0

Hello, as many of you may be aware I also moderate another image board at 7chan.org and the 7chan IRC. We are looking to grow our videogame IRC network and looking for people to join us in playing some videogames. We host a room dedicated to playing videogames online, or, just discussion about video games in general. Some people in the room mentioned bunkerchan.xyz/games/ and so here I am. I am looking to get a little input from the user base of /games/ about maybe hosting our irc network here as the official /games/ irc. That way we can have more people to play vidya with us over there and /games/ can, actually, have a central location for hooking up with other video game enthusiasts. Everybody wins in this case. That's my logic behind it. The bunkerchan mods unanimously voted in support of the matter. I just wanna get a little input from you guys here before we proceed.

Our irc network is located at irc.7chan.org/6697. SSL is required our gaming room can be located at #netplay. If anyone is interested in checking it out.
I'll leave this sticky up for a day or so then take it down after I get some input from everyone. What does everyone think?

I'm currently replaying Fallout 4 in survival difficulty with a fuckton of mods and I got to say it's pretty fun, I also learnt to enjoy more what stories are told by the environment even if the actual writing is still awful.

But recently I discovered this
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minutemen_(anti-Communist_organization)
So what the fuck is up here, we are meant be the leader of the minutemen (out of nowhere) in a game clearly made up of 50' and 60' references, there's no way the creators did not know about this (or is there? I mean the plot is retarded). Does Preston even know he's black??

Anyway I was building homes and infrastructures for the working men and women of the commonwealth but now I don't know what to think. Am I the bad guy? There's not even an anarchist faction similar to the followers of the apocalypse I could go with in this game. Should I just become a raider and wait for Caesar to rebuild the productive forces?

Recently people like Sterling and Schreier actually made a lot of shit that actually came close to class concious. Game Design

Aren't video games a most perfect realization of the spectacle? I fail to think of anything which has made a "concrete inversion of life" so effectively as video games. More than this it seems to exhaust all who play them of the tribulations of life there by converting them into the most significant population of last men to date. Recognizing this it follows that video games are only useful to the extent to which we can make games capable of waking their viewer to the theft of their life by the bourgeoisie, both in terms of surplus value extraction, and in terms of the spectacle. It's entirely possible that many here could team up to make a game capable of waking its viewers to the theft of their life by the bourgeoisie, both in terms of surplus value extraction, and in terms of the spectacle. While making a quality 3D game is much more challenging it is possible to get good results with GPL engines as that screen shot shows. Even if nothing else it is a productive direction for leftists with this affliction to pursue, and on a personal level resist the spectacle and alienation.Any ideas for plot or mechanics of a game of this sort?

>You wonder if lower stage capitalism is possible in some form or if it's always the case that the only way to go is directly from a war-torn feudal society. You imagine that it would be much easier to go back to when slavery was still legal.
>You don't accept this conclusion as you want to achieve full comminism as soon as possible. You don't know how long you have left to live, but you're going to use it to fight the powers that be.

>You come back to life and find that the system still hasn't changed. The working class still doesn't have enough to survive while the rich continue to get richer. This isn't what you fought for, but what can you do?
>You start the revolution all over again and when you're done with that you go back to fighting the rich. It's never ending, but then revolutions always are.
>You gulag the rich until you're old and then die in your sleep.
>You come back to life as Stalin, but you don't want to be Stalin, you want to be free. You find it ironic that the only way to be truly free is to destroy the system that enslaves you in the first place.
>You destroy the system that enslaves you and the working class. You bring down the capitalist state and create a workers' state.

PC Videogames were only good between 1993 and 2000

This is not a discussion thread this is a declaration. What I am about to say is NOT up for debate and you CANNOT possibly dispute anything written here.

Remember how early cars could only be operated by literal mechanics because they were so unintuitive and shit? Games pre-1993 were exactly like that. Games had no plot and shite gameplay which does not hold up at all these days, nevermind the unbearably primitive graphics. Gaming was the nichest of hobbies and considering the fact that PCs used to cost like 15'000 dollary doos in todays money, it was never going to become mainstream.

Then in 1993 Knack came out saw the release of Doom and Ultima VII: The Black Gate (whose expansion Ultima VII Part 2: Serpent Isle would surpass the base game), the mother and father of modern gaming.
Doom as every brainless chimp knows invented the modern FPS and by extension TPS genres, the two most lucrative and popular gaming genres and showed how fucking rad vidya gaems could be. It was mainstream, caused just the right amount of moral panic and sold millions. Doom would then be surpassed by Doom 2 and finally by Blood, the best non-3d shooter period.

Ultima VII was the first genuinely good and playable Ultima game that still holds up. While the plot is hot trash, it proved the viability of the open world. Serpent Isle would then go on to prove that games could tell an engaging story. Together, they laid the foundation for every modern RPG including the Baldur's Gate series which has yet to be surpassed in excellence.

Not only did the 90s see the most influential games of all time, they were also the best. Why? Because during this time, the industry had struck the perfect balance between technological capability and commercialisation. Games before did not have the tech to be good and games after were ruined by capitalism. Ideas could flourish and were unburdened by investor interests, at least not to the degree of today. All of this culminated in 2000 the undisputed best year in gaming. BG 2 is the best crpg of all time (Planescape Torment has the best story but is lacking as a gaming experience). Red Alert 2 is the best RTS of all time. Diablo 2 is the best action rpg of all time. Deus Ex is the best PC game period according to some.

These days, no risks are taken. Games like Myst, Myth 1 or 2 or even Planescape could never be made today. Games are so fucking expensive to make and in order to make back their money, devs are forced to pander to the most common denominator. Gamers are Nazis, who cry and whine about idpol anytime a woman is on screen. Nerds back then were progressive and you never heard anything close to the gamergate bullshit of today. Graphics move more copies than concepts and plots are dumbed down so that every shitlib can understand them. Indiegames provide some refuge from the modern hell that is 21. century gaming but even things considered these days to be masterpieces like Undertale, Cave Story or Disco Elysium pale in comparison to the golden age.

Im not gonna proof read any of this lmao

I don't want to be "that guy"
but it's always stuck out to me as strange that the ending of the witcher game series ends with Geralt as a landlord. Both as a character and story wise it's a strange place for him to end up. He's very accepting of suddenly having a servant and literal peasants working this big vineyard for him.
Should seem like Geralt would resist being in that kind of position. Witcher series also examines a lot of contemporary ideology through the prism of this particular world, even economic exploitation like debts or unfair wages, but in this one instance the feudal arrangement just goes unremarked upon. I dunno what was up with that.

Not a bad thing, i just noticed it.

I played Starsector for a while, but there isn't a lot of meat to the late-game colony sim stuff. I made a completely planned and AI assisted colony by farming alpha cores and I slowly gained the ability to terraform planets via a mod, resulting in me making as many planets in the solar system possible to be inhabited by humanity with little to no need for environmental gear, basically making a densely populated reach of space completely overpowering all the other factions by miles.

So I got addicted to this damn game, and I think it has a lot of leftist potential. Your character is rooted in anti-capitalism, and there's even a corporation destroying the environnement and community life. Two NPCs bear scars from imperialism (Kent, a soldier) and capitalism (Shane, a depressive alcoholic working a 9-5). Besides from that there aren't many references to ideologies (except for the religion of Yoba and a book against the war). What would you think of a mod adding more political substance to Pelican Town? (for example an active faction against Joja, or NPC helping you rebuilding the CC). I don't like this idea that everyone in this town with so much free time gave up that quickly their community center, and you are the only one able to save it with your bare hands.

I think it's pretty good. But it sugarcoats the level of reaction a socialist goverment would get.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_of_Guns:_Gun_Disassembly

>World of Guns: Gun Disassembly is a cross-genre simulation and puzzle video game that allows the player to operate and disassemble various firearms, as well as other mechanisms like automobiles, AFVs and aircraft. It was released in 2014 for Windows[1] and Facebook, and has been subsequently ported to the social network VK, as well as OS X, iOS, and Android platforms. The game is a follow-up on the same developer's Gun Disassembly series, first released in 2010,[2] expanding on the latter's feature set and library of interactive models.

>The software can be used as both an interactive firearms reference source and encyclopedia,[3] and a casual puzzle game with a goal of disassembling and assembling models in the correct sequence and in the least possible time.
