IT'S THE HOLIDAYS!
what new games or gear have you/are you getting that you're excited about?

for the first time in my life i'm going to be able to play modern games and on high settings. no more shitty laptop gaming. i can finally play GTA5, and FO4, and Witcher 3, and so so SO many more. finna catch up on the last 5-10 years of gaming.
got a dell optiplex 9020 with an i7 4790, 500gb SSD, and 1TB HDD for $250. then i got a GTX 1660 super for $250. then a 1440p 144hz monitor for $225. it's all gonna get here around the 18th.

i'm so fucking hype bros oh my god.

I'm gonna sit back and enjoy some good old games I still haven't beaten, since there are zero games of worth to justify an expensive computer these days.

yeah it chunked me kind of hard but i've been consoling myself with the fact that i'm going to spend literally no money on games.
that's the thing that goes kind of undiscussed in the console/PC wars: consolefags can't fly the jolly roger.

>>6800
what's the appeal for you? looked a little grindy from the clips i've seen

its free so i just checked it out. At this point it is not to grindy though i fear the later gameplay but i didnt pay for it so i can just enjoy it till they want my money :D

Alot of modern games are really trash but I really enjoyed Witcher 3 and GTA 5

Grats OP. I recall how good it felt getting an actually working modern laptop after years of using a shitty 50GB memory piece of crap that would overheat and shut down from Farcry 1. Even if my current laptop is a bit pit of date, it really is an ivory tower when you realize that you never have to deal with memory running out or games being simply unplayable even with lowest settings, meaning you have to sustain yourself on replaying Tropico 1.

Anyways, no upgrades this year, but planning something for Easter. As for holidays, I'm planning on doing all the content from the new WoW xpac that I can.
>>

I am unfortunately locked into old tech because I don't want CPUs or UEFI systems with NSA backdoors. All I can do is upgrade my GPU as long as new stuff can keep plugging into my old motherboard. Gonna be rocking DDR3 RAM and this FX-8350 for a long time.
>>

>>6830
At that point why don't you split your computer activities? Normie gamer shit on a new run-of-the-mill Windows machine, and everything else on your oldtech machine? I can only guess you are pirating, but like, I sincerely doubt anyone gives a shit, also you should be able to just put the game files on an external hard drive and transfer them without using the internet? And that gives another idea - why don't just use no internet on it at all outside of updates?
>>

 No.6832

>>6831
Nah, I don't have time for that shit and I renounced Windows a long time ago. I prefer to have one machine that does most of my stuff that I can trust. Dunno what you're getting at with the unauthorized copying presumption. Normie gamer shit is trash anyway, I don't feel like I've missed out in a single hyped pile of AAA vomit. All the good PC games released in modern times are indie or doujin and they typically have low hardware requirements.

couldnt you get chinese hardware?
They probably also have backdoors but I dont think chinese intelligence cares about you
>>

 No.6835

>>6833
The problem with hardware and software with intentional backdoors isn't just that the group responsible for them might make you less secure, it's that anyone who manages to find an exploit based on the backdoor could use it against you. In the Vault7 leaks alone we found out that the CIA had developed seven or eight exploits based around UEFI privilege escalation. And then of course their tools were leaked all over the darkweb for everyone else to make use of them before Wikileaks finally published them. Security through obscurity is not security.

based.
>the GPU situation makes things impossible
what do you mean? the cost?
i was honestly in the dark on it because i thought any GPU worth having was like $800-1000, but then got redpilled on the $100-300 options.

check out pic related, which you could probably throw in your current tower with a little youtube instructions.

then think of that price range yielding the performance in these videos.

ebay is pretty based with a decent amount of transparency. basically never buy from someone without lots of good reviews and history, and also trust that more money is to be made having a good rep and flipping shit than scamming one person and then never selling anything on that profile again (ie sellers are incentivized to be honest).
also graphics cards don't degrade over time, so even buying one that had "heavy use" wouldn't affect its performance. either it works or it doesn't, and if that person had a history of selling broken products it would show up in their reviews.

Surely everything decays over time?
>>

>>6860
only things with moving parts have the degradation you're thinking of.
graphics cards have no moving parts (other than the fan which is easily fixed) and thus suffer only natural erosion.
they can blow a circuit but that's only if your running with abnormal power and heat for extended periods of time which you shouldn't be and there are easy workarounds for.

Anything with electricity running through it suffers natural corrosive problems over time due to random small shocks deforming the silicon. It's the same reason solid-state drives don't last forever.

well if it exists for graphics cards it doesn't show itself in performance. you can find a decent amount of videos on the subject.

i was telling this to a friend of mine who games on pc but likes consoles anyway and he says its the fact that console games generally do not have drm (as long as you can find them on physical media) that makes them arguably on par with pc games. you can download console game isos to burn as well. i'll admit i couldn't be arsed to argue with him because i don't (and won't) have a console due to walled gardens, but still. does he make a compelling point?

To be honest I was more making a crack about the concept of entropy. The universe trends towards disorder in general. As time continues, the number of graphics cards will trend downwards as more of the energy of the universe is converted to waste heat.

But in seriousness, I got my latest graphics card like 3-4 years ago and I see no real reason to upgrade anytime soon. I even have 4K and sure I can't run everything at 4K ultra but I either just turn down to medium or turn down the resolution, who care. I play more indie games than AAA anyhow.

>does he make a compelling point?
no because "DRM" doesn't affect performance. you should read up on what DRM actually is because it's NOT a wheel clamp. it's more just a restriction on access that is primarily geared towards making players stay on a platform. IE if you want to play a game you have to download it and play it through steam. that's DRM.
however using pic related as an analogy, pirating a game is merely spoofing the key to the car. imagine if DRM was what people tend to think it is particularly as was talked about surrounding the CP2077 release. if there were two versions of the game, one with performance limiting DRM and one without, pirates would just spoof the one without and those copies would be the most popular and the DRM copies would die out.
so either way pirating is free of any "DRM"

Some DRM really is horribly onerous though. Granted, those have mostly died out due to consumer backlash but some forms of DRM like Stardock I think and some other proprietary ones basically infiltrated your PC like malware and actively fucked up your shit.
>>

>>6956
DRM is exactly like a wheel clamp or ankle monitor though. It's a completely unnecessary background process that wastes your PC's resources and serves no purpose except to police your legitimate usage of software.

Now that my exams are finished, I am going to finally play Pillars of Eternity after having it installed on my PC for months. I am thinking of building an Eothas priest with high dex and int.

I might fool around with Surviving Mars too since I just picked it up on GOG for real cheap. I don't know how it will run on my system though since the jump in vram requirements goes from integrated graphics as a minimum all the way to 4gb as recommended.

I tried Eye on you guys recommended and it was the most mind numbingly tedious horseshit ever, why the fuck is every level so insanely oversized? why does it take several minutes to sprint from one side of the hub world to the other? How the FUCK does the save system even work? I’ve never played a game where I legit could not figure out how the save system even functioned before until this game.

What the fuck.

It's copying m8s. No, being an indie dev doesn't make you any less susceptible of me copying your shit. I might buy it from you if you give me the source code.

>Muh copying
Retarded argument. Before anyone attacks me, I pirate all my shit anyway (even crap I could get for free from uni) because I don't care. The "It's just copying brah" is stupid, because it assumes the piece of media is valueless due to the ability to copy it infinately. But nonsense. Even if it was copied infinately, there are still production costs, and if they aren't covered, no one (under commodity production) would make them. Secondly, the piece of media will only get copied a relatively small number of times, not infinately. This is the reason why any non-hobbyist digital media would have to either be paid for, or taxed out of the populace.
Oh, and a good paralel to better explain what I mean - a paintings only real produce is the act of seeing the said painting, which is infinately replicable act with no labour needed to achieve, however the artist still needs bread, and the display place needs to be maintained, hence the visitor is forced to pay for a ticket, or has his taxed labour value directed towards maintanence.

It's a meme. It's a terrible, broken game with hints of a greater vision buried inside. The hypothetical game that EYE was supposed to be is amazing though. It will be made one day, assuming the world doesn't end beforehand.

This, except that I'll only willingly support the devs if I like them enough and if I have a small amount of money to waste.
