Do you think cats can pass the mirror test? My cats seem self aware, but aren't interested in mirrors. They also have zero understanding of computer screens, and keep crawling behind speakers looking for the source when you play recorded cat meows, no matter how many times you do it.

I really wish I could communicate enough with animals to explain how technology works sometimes, or how certain things are dangerous to them. It would be more fun if I could teach cats about light switches, or if we could design VR video headsets with games that cats would like to play.

the real question is would you talk with your sentient cat and try to turn him into a comrade?

I think videos like this show the mirror test is over-rated; the problem with measuring intelligence is that it's hard to not be anthropocentric and end up measuring human-like behavior. It's also a problem I have with the Turing Test, there are REALLY stupid AI's (like cleverbot) that can fool joe-schmoe yet can't solve any actual problems, meanwhile animals that are considered "dumb" (like ants) can solve surprisingly complex problems with the proper stimulation.

>but aren't interested in mirrors
I have seen cats hissing at their own mirror image when it's a large enough mirror that reaches down to the ground. Also it might be that if the cat recognizes it's self in the mirror that it looses interest.

>They also have zero understanding of computer screens

If you show them video that was recorded low to the ground, from a similar point of view they would have, they get really into watching screens.

>It would be more fun if I could teach cats about light switches

You can do that, you just have to make switches that grab their attention, you know that switches we designed look tempting for humans and invite us to touch them… You have to do design with cat cognitive ergonomics in mind, cats like pull on strings with fluffy things attached to it, they also like to shove tiny objects with their paws, so a long sideways mounted paddle-switch with a ball on the end, near to the ground, would probably also work.

I'd just like to add onto >>5857 and >>5864, other than the mirror test being anthropocentric to the point of being bullshit it really does depend on the cat. I've got two cats who completely understand what a mirror is but they're not interested. These two had issues with screens and speakers at first, but they figured that out quick and will watch action movies and nature shows, and figured out how to open a sliding door (but they were too weak for the lever) as well as a round knobbed door within a week of encountering them at a few months old, plus a bunch of other shit they have no business understanding. They even understand a surprising amount of English compared to other cats. I think most cats are only inquisitive about cat stuff, while others like these two are more curious about the world.

To be fair these two are Siamese which are different.

The same can be said for a dolphin with their lacking of tool use.

People don't like strays much apparently so good work. It keeps them from hunting rabbits and the like. My neighbors didn't feed their cat enough and it would literally hunt and disembowel adult Cottontails.

It would depend on whether or not increased intelligence gave the cats access to a higher amount of calories or some eqluivalent to make it worth it. Domesticated cats don't really want for any biological needs so higher intelligence would probably not help them very much (they have us for that after all). It might end up factoring into sexual selection, which is hypothesized to have played a role in the evolution of human intelligence in the first place. That's a really chaotic and arbitrary thing though, and to keep it going you'd just as much need cats to be aroused by displays of intelligence. That may actually be easier to engineer than intelligence itself though.

No rabbits here and feeding the cats regularly prevents them from raiding garbage cans and making a mess. Cats in general tend to be assholes to each other while being lovable toward humans they trust. I guess you can say the same about humans.

I love my four cats. Although my oldest is my favorite. There's absolutely nothing better than an old as shit cat. If you treat them with the most basic respect, they'll follow you into the gates of hell. Younger cats are much more work, and aren't content to be your conjoined twin.

Yep, it seems that, after initially being confused about the "other cat", they quickly learn that it's a reflective surface, then they lose all interest, not even being curious about the "room" that's visible behind their reflection. After all, reflections are also found in nature, like in the water.

First I was like: I don't care about this movie.

Then I was like: "Idris Elba? You motherfuckers."

Compared to even Ready Player One it loses out, not to mention Hermione from Chamber of Secrets (15 years ago!) Same thing with the new Lion King.

To explain it a bit better, the problem we struggle with is that of uncanny valley and how personifying works. Seeing an animal with human traits (including, for example, a human face) can be fine if done tastefully, though extreme care must be taken to not hit on that uncanny valley, a concern not present when it's an animal face. This divide is only worsened when, in the case of Cats, it's humans in crappy CGI outfits pretending very poorly to be cats. They kept each actor's face present enough that they were individually identifiable as their human, so we the audience suffered given the inability to separate Taylor Swift from the character, resulting in what basically amounted to seeing popular celebrities licking their crotches and pretending to be cats in horrible CGI outfits. When you fail to take away that distinctly human element in such a motion, it struggles to come off as anything more than erotic and horny.

To expand on this, your first example is very well-done and looks great, but if I were to see a video of him, otherwise as a human, pawing at the ground and butting horns with another person also in a similar get-up, it would probably come off as looking like two dudes being horny, like they're a pin-drop away from locking lips, Andrew Hussie fashion. Seeing animals act like humans is cute, seeing humans act like animals is a bit less so.

And have YOU seen a Chihuaha? The fuckers are mean to a fault, they're like bitchier house-cats, want food, water and warm beds and get snappy if they don't get it the right way. very few are actually prone to affection and those tend to be larger crossbreeds if anything.

the mirror test is biased toward species that primarily rely on sight.
Hearing and smell are as or more important to how a cat perceives the world, they certainly recognize their own scent and just try to record her mewing and play it back.
