Sarkozy, who was incarcerated at La Santé prison in Paris on October 21, 2025, was released under strict judicial supervision pending his appeal. Conditions of his release include a ban on leaving France and a ban on contacting any justice ministry officials.
A court granted the release after his lawyers argued he was not a flight risk and did not meet the legal justifications for continued "provisional detention" while an appeal is ongoing. The appeal hearing is expected to take place in March of next year.
Nicolas Sarkozy was jailed for his conviction on a charge of criminal conspiracy related to the illegal financing of his 2007 presidential election campaign with funds from the late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.
In September 2025, a Paris court found Sarkozy guilty of "criminal conspiracy" for allowing his close aides to engage with Libyan officials to secure campaign financing between 2005 and 2007. This was before Sarkozy played a key role in the NATO overthrow of Gaddafi and decimation of Libya.
