EU countries approve Mercosur trade deal after 25 years of talks
France, Poland, Austria, Ireland and Hungary expressed their opposition while Belgium abstained. Italy voted in favor, after forcing a delay last month. EU capitals now have until 5 p.m. on Friday to lodge any objections and formalize the vote. This so-called written procedure gives political backing to the informal approval delivered by the Brussels-based ambassadors.

“Ivan Mordisco” calls on Colombia’s guerrilla groups to unite against “the interventionist eagle”
Since the creation of the EMC, Mordisco’s guerrillas and the ELN have been vying for control over the border with Venezuela, and have become active in clandestine mining activities in the southern jungles of the neighboring country. The groups have tried to bridge divisions on multiple occasions, but have yet to forge a united front that would allow them to overthrow the State. President Gustavo Petro has accused the guerrilla group of having abandoned their revolutionary principles for financial gains.

Trump's cold shoulder to Reza Pahlavi sparks speculation of US 'Venezuela model' in Iran
Trump demurred on Thursday when podcast host Hugh Hewitt asked if he would meet the 65-year-old son of Iran’s late shah. “I’ve watched him, and he seems like a nice person,” Trump said. “But I’m not sure that it would be appropriate at this point to do that as president.” “I think that we should let everybody go out there, and we’ll see who emerges. I’m not sure necessarily that I, that it would be an appropriate thing to do,” he added.

Homelessness worsens in New Zealand
On December 16, the Salvation Army and Community Housing Aotearoa released the results of a recent survey, which found that in Auckland, the biggest city, the number of people living without shelter more than doubled between September 2024 and September 2025 from 426 to 940. This surge is the direct outcome of the National Party-led government’s brutal austerity measures, designed to make the working class pay for the deepening economic crisis and to divert more public money to the military to prepare for war.

Speakers boycott Adelaide Festival after Palestinian-Australian author cut from Writers’ Week line-up
The Adelaide Festival Board said in a statement it had “formed the view that it would not be culturally sensitive” to feature Abdel-Fattah on the program at this “unprecedented time so soon after Bondi”, in reference to the massacre of Jews at Bondi Beach in December. The board said it did “not suggest in any way” that Abdel-Fattah or her writings had any connection to the Bondi attack and it understood the decision will “cause discomfort and pressure to other participants”.

Under the waiver, certain federal requirements will be dropped so that less strings are attached giving the state more flexibility in using the aid. America’s neglect of Puerto Rico’s education system is at a breaking point
Imagine teaching in a classroom where rain pours through the ceiling, books are outdated and you have to buy your own supplies because you’d have to wait at least two months to get it from the central office. This is not a dystopian movie, but instead the reality for communities in the United States’ seventh-largest public education system: Puerto Rico. What would normally be considered unfathomable in any of the 50 states is the reality for over 240,000 public school students throughout the archipelago. I worked for the U.S. Department of Education, and after four years working in Puerto Rico, visiting dozens of schools and meeting with hundreds of students and teachers, I sadly realized what many of the island’s educational leaders long told me — that the federal government doesn’t care about Puerto Rico’s education system. For too long, the conversation about the Puerto Rico education system’s struggles has ignored a fundamental truth: U.S. government policies have systematically discriminated against Puerto Rican students. This reality is not incidental — it is a result of deliberate choices that Congress has made that define Puerto Rico’s relationship with the United States.

A Palestinian Family Tale Made Epic in All That’s Left of You
Writer-director and actor Cherien Dabis’s All That’s Left of You is an epic for the ages that follows a single Palestinian family from their 1948 expulsion from what is now Israel, to living in a West Bank refugee camp in the 1970s, to the Intifada in 1988, all the way to 2022. In doing so, Dabis has given the much-maligned and vilified Palestinians a human face by telling their side of a story that has long been dominated by the Israeli narrative. Portraying Hanan, the female lead, Dabis convincingly ages over the film’s time span from a woman in her thirties to an elder in the twilight of her life. As the world-weary Hanan takes stock of the years, she reflects the hardships and enduring humanity of her besieged people. As Dabis reveals in this interview, the final scenes of the aging Hanan were filmed just as Gaza was being blown to smithereens. A child of the diaspora, Dabis was born and raised in America and attended Columbia University’s School of the Arts. Her 2009 directorial debut, Amreeka, opened at Sundance and earned the FIPRESCI International Critics Prize in the Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes. The multihyphenate received an Emmy nomination for helming an episode of the Steve Martin–Martin Short comedy on Hulu Only Murders in the Building. Dabis has directed and written other shows for HBO and Showtime and acts in the Netflix series Mo, starring Mohammad Amer. Jordan’s official submission to the Academy for Best International Feature Film, All That’s Left of You, was recently shortlisted for an Academy Award. It is also nominated for the Spirit Award for Best International Film and has won or been nominated for awards at various festivals, including snagging two prizes at the San Francisco International Film Festival. Mark Ruffalo and Javier Bardem are co–executive producers of this nearly two-and-a-half-hour cinematic saga that is a veritable Palestinian persistence of memory. It’s playing now in select theaters.

Neither Fascism nor Liberalism: Sovietism! by Antonio Gramsci
When the Communist Party, in the days after the assassination of Matteoti, issued the slogan: “Down with the government of assassins! Dissolution of the Fascist militia!” it didn’t think that the government of assassins should be replaced by a government of those who in all their policies had opened the way to and armed the assassins; it never thought that Giolitti, Nitti, and Amendola, who were in power when the Fascist militia was formed, would be capable of disarming this militia which they had favored and armed against the working class. In putting forth its slogan our party didn’t intend to replace failing fascism with the old liberalism, whose opprobrious failure and definitive liquidation the March on Rome had signaled. The Communist Party, from the beginning of the crisis of fascism, affirmed that the working class and the peasants must be the gravediggers and the successors of those in power. The action of the mass of industrial proletarians and peasants is necessary for the defeat of fascism, for the class struggle with all of its consequences. Without a doubt the proletariat should and must use, in its struggle against fascism, the contradictions and the struggles that have developed within the bourgeoisie and the petty-bourgeoisie. But without direct action fascism can never be brought down. Posing the problem in this way would mean, at the same time, clearly posing the question of the succession to fascism. With the defeat of fascism by the action of the worker and peasant masses liberalism will have no part in the succession: this right belongs to the government of the workers and peasants which alone will be capable of and will have the sincere determination to disarm the Fascist militia, arming the working class and the peasants.
