Modern coolants aren't damaging to the environment like original freon was (which takes a lifetime to break down after a leak where the modern breaks down in a day). But since the seasonal weather will become more extreme for everyone I recommend a mini-split unit in a double hung sash with better insulation at the sides.

I think it's nationalism. AC is seen as the "American" thing. They see it as proof that Americans are just weaker even though the US is demonstrably much hotter than the EU even in cool climates like the Northeast.
They had a huge viral moment on Tik Tok about this. With many Europeans scoffing at the heat safety culture America has like the idea that you should drink several glasses a water a day. Or the fact that many Americans carry around water bottles with them. Europeans, even western ones, are actually quite ignorant on average. I think Americans are so used to being criticized and criticizing themselves that they assume other countries are more advanced. But America is quite progressive in many regards. It's something they should be proud of.
One thing is that while everyone bags on America's abysmal public transportation system. America's water and power infrastructure are second to none. I lived in Germany and the water would get contaminated by sewage every winter. I had to fill up a bath tub with the uncontaminated water still in the pipes and use that for all my needs for several days. Even in very poor towns in the US, something like that is unheard of. The power would go out for a few days at a time too. Or sometimes I'd enter residential units that didn't have power. It's literally illegal to do that in the states.
