This was basically figured out in/by the 1800s; not even just by socialists, guys like Henry George were able to observe that wealth accrued in the hands of a few even as national wealth increased. Neoliberal "freedom" is actually just the "freeing" of wealth and power from any kind of democratic (or popular, if you will) checks. "Free markets" with no mechanism to curb rentseeking, corporate power (even the early US was stricter about corporate charters than the present-day US), and monopolistic control are actually just backdoor Fascism.
