Indeed, I wish more leftists would bother to properly tease out the class differences between different classes in society. There was some headway when the term "precariat" became mainstream, but it's still a slog getting people to realize that some members of the middle class have more in common with billionaires than janitors.

This isn't something new, and the fact that there seems to be a miss understanding regarding it is rooted on lack of study and political practice. Every class has "factions" within it.

Well they benefit from the system and will never turn against it, so yeah from the POV of the potentially revolutionary proletariat they are allies, but that doesn't mean they have all that much in common materially.

A lot of western so-called-leftists are exactly this group of affluent city dwelling group of people who are really liberals at heart. That's the mainstream "left". I think the actual proletariat haven't yet found a way to organize, this is still in its infancy.
