Understanding why cities are shit is interesting but it is also incredibly frustrating because what can we do? Is there some kind of DIY urbanism or something?

There's a metal box you can buy with round rubber feet. You put dinosaur juice inside and it gives you the freedom to live far away from the city but still return for work and leisure. Maybe when you dysfunctional economy collapses and the borders open you can buy one on the free market.

It's not a solution in itself but where I live there are a lot of neighborhood initiatives for turning vacant lots into communitarian gardens and activity spaces. It's usually well received even by apolitical types and old folks and often a few of them get involved and start becoming radicalized to a greater or lesser extent.

Cities and city planning is actually pretty much only shit because of capitalism. Soviet cities were quite nice as are the ones found in the DPRK. Cities are actually quite optimal: They house large populations of people in, comparatively, small areas when you are talking about natural eco systems that surround them. The only reason they suck today is because personal transportation is a cancer that must be stopped and cities become planned around them and the flow of capital.

I love cities, though, and I miss living in one.

the video is decent as a hole but you can skip to 6 minutes 50 seconds if you want to skip directly to the city planning bits.

But that's what makes it so frustrating! I don't want to wait for a revolution that will probably never come!
