I want to get an old thinkpad, like an x200 and make it into a secure, tor-only machine. What is the best way to do this? Something like Qubes OS or is that just a meme? Looking for solutions for full disc encryption, network card that connects to TOR alone, that kind of stuff.

Thanks.

Qubes OS is good. its like a meta os. you can run something like 'whonix' linux distro on qubes will will force all traffic through tor.

if you're going to buy an x200 make sure to use libreboot as well

isnt the thinkpad an old laptop? might not have the power to run VM based OS?

that’s the main problem with trying to go full FOSS. nothing is powerful enough anymore.

That simply isn't true.

X200 won't be able to run Qubes.

Anyway, your general and perfectionist approach will make you fail for both technical and psychological reasons.
What you need to do first is develop concrete threat models, and a hierarchy of priorities. I assume that in your case you should probably concentrate more on software than hardware, and specifically on networking, which also splits into many different low to high level tiers, anything from your machine connecting to anything else to what you do on which website.
Using Tor only, as well as modifying and limiting use of the Internet in the first place, will for most people bring more benefits than all other measures combined.

What about x220/x230?

>archeological computery
Bad strategy old stocks will run out and old CPUs have documented security flaws that are unfixable because they are etched into the silicon. Get into opensource hardware if you want a secure computer. Even something like a community developed Risk V chip produced on a relatively dated lithography process node will run circles around ancient processors that are over one or two decades old.

X200 can't run Qubes, but it can easily run TAILS.

And where can OP get this now?

Just pay $2000 to have someone else install Qubes on a thinkpad.

They also have some hardware tamperproof evidence thingy.
