Yoon Suk Yeol (emphasis on the suck) has declared martial law, out of the blue. Probably because he's loosing power, his approval rating tanked, there's scandals surrounding his wife and the opposition is blocking his political programs.

The pretext he gave for the martial law was "eradicating the pro north Korean communist forces"
If only there were communist forces about to topple the wannabe dictator of BRoK

From this even you can clearly see the difference between North Korea and South Korea: in the first an autocrath does whatever he wants without anyone being able to stop him while in the second the democratically elected parliament is a shield for the freedoms of the people, a true bastion of democracy that cannot be subjugated by dictators such as Kim Jong Un.

This recent coup attempt is evidence that democracy in South Korea is not as robust as we thought, and that there might still be lingering vestiges of its dictatorial past looking to re-assert them selves.

North Korea has done exceptionally well given their circumstances considering that the DPRK has not been turned into a failed state like Libya or an ongoing battle-zone like Syria.

I think the coop attempt might have been linked to a neocon scheme to convert ROK into a weapons factory masquerading as a country. So if it had succeeded the Chinese might have intervened before the DPRK nuked them, but still.
