It's coming in days. Weeks tops. Since the end of the 12 day long Imposed War, the US & Israel have been recuperating, eagerly scheming another attack on Iran since the last one backfired. The EU has played along with this scheme, collaborating with the US and Israel to restore sanctions against Iran, a continued act of aggressive economic warfare.

U.S. Secretary of "Defense" Pete Hegseth has recently called an "unprecedented" number of high ranking U.S. military officials to meet in Virginia for an undisclosed purpose, and in the same week, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is scheduled to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump.

This is a thread for discussing this war as soon as it kicks off, and the lead-up to it.

IRGC intelligence body says continuation of violence ‘unacceptable”
The intelligence organisation of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has released a statement echoing the earlier words of President Masoud Pezeshkian, condemning violence committed during the nationwide protests and calling the incidents “terrorist” in nature.

“We warn that continuation of this situation is unacceptable and the blood of the victims of recent terrorist incidents is on the hands of its planners, and the Iranian people consider it legitimate to compensate and prevent the spread of insecurity for themselves”, the statement, carried by the state-linked Student News Network.

Tasnim news agency reported earlier that at least 109 security personnel had been killed in the protests, but opposition activists say the total death toll is much higher and includes dozens of protesters. Al Jazeera cannot independently verify either figure.

The intelligence organisation also said in its statement that it considers maintaining community security in Iran a “red line”.

Iran’s chief justice says judges appointed to handle cases of ‘rioters’
In comments carried by the semiofficial Tasnim news agency, Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei says that “under no circumstances” will there be leniency towards anyone caught participating in riots during the ongoing protests in Iran.

“In order to quickly and accurately handle the cases of the rioters, special branches composed of capable, experienced, and brave judges have been appointed throughout the country,” he said, according to Tasnim.

Iranian semiofficial news agency says dozens of ambulances destroyed in recent days
Tasnim news agency says that during “riots” over recent days of political unrest in the country, healthcare infrastructure was “attacked”.

It said that, according to its reporters, about 150 ambulances were destroyed.

Each was valued between roughly $63,000 and $120,000, according to the agency. Al Jazeera could not independently verify this claim.

State TV airs funerals of security force members killed in protests
Iranian state television has had correspondents appear on the streets in several cities to show calm areas with a date stamp on the screen. Tehran and Mashhad were not included.

They also showed pro-government demonstrations in Qom and Qazvin.

Ali Larijani, a top security official, went on state TV to accuse some demonstrators of “killing people or burning some people, which is very similar to what ISIS does” – referring to the armed group also known as ISIL.

State TV aired the funerals of slain security force members while reporting another six had been killed in Kermanshah.

In Fars province, violence killed 13 people, and seven security forces were killed in North Khorasan province, it added. It also showed a pick-up truck full of bodies in body bags and later a morgue.

What did Pezeshkian say in his interview on state television?
Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian has pledged to overhaul Iran’s struggling economy, saying his government is “ready to listen to its people” while accusing the United States and Israel of trying to “sow chaos and disorder” by directing elements of the unrest.

He acknowledged that the people “have concerns”, stating that “we should sit with them, and if it is our duty, we should resolve their concerns”.

However, he warned, “The higher duty is not to allow a group of rioters to come and destroy the entire society.”

‘Situation seems calmer in Iran tonight’
By Tohid Asadi
Reporting from Tehran, Iran

I can say, tonight, the situation looks a little bit, I emphasise, a little bit, calmer compared to Thursday.

It seems that there is a cooling down of the protests.

Another point is the recent pro-state demonstrations. One big one is scheduled for tomorrow, and for the past few days, we have been seeing some gatherings and rallies, specifically in the mosques, which were targeted by protesters, showing that some people are trying to send a message of solidarity that was previously sent by the supreme leader of the country [Ayatollah Ali Khamenei].

He asked for keeping unity [in the country] under this situation.

https://aje.io/qoyxxy?update=4231386

‘Gap in perception of protests between domestic and international audiences’
Analyst Hassan Ahmadian says there are significant differences between how people inside Iran view the ongoing demonstrations and how they’re perceived abroad.

“What we rely on in trying to gauge where things are moving is basically the national internet that is within Iran and satellites that people have access to watch international media,” Ahmadian, an academic at the University of Tehran, told Al Jazeera.

These are now the two main “connecting routes” for information inside the country, he added.

Coverage by foreign opposition media suggests “huge numbers” of Iranians on the streets, while content on domestic platforms and the national internet is “drastically different”, said Ahmadian.

Demonstrations in the capital Tehran appear to have diminished since late last week. “Thursday was the peak, I would say, and afterwards it’s [protests] been going down,” Ahmadian said.

Trump says US military considering ‘very strong options’ for Iran
US president says Washington is closely monitoring protests in Iran and considering possible military intervention.

United States President Donald Trump has said that Washington is considering “strong options” in response to the protests in Iran, including possible military intervention.

“We’re looking at it very seriously. The military is looking at it, and we’re looking at some very strong options. We’ll make a determination,” he told reporters on board Air Force One late on Sunday.

He said Iran’s leadership had called, seeking “to negotiate” after his threats of military action, and that a “meeting is being set up”.

But he added that “we may have to act before a meeting”.

Trump’s latest threat came as Iranian leaders issued a stark warning against military intervention, with Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf saying “In the case of an attack on Iran, the occupied territories [Israel] as well as all US bases and ships will be our legitimate target”.

The protests began on December 28, when merchants at Tehran’s Grand Bazaar closed their shops over the Iranian rial’s plummeting value. The demonstrations quickly spread nationwide, with grievances evolving from economic concerns over soaring living costs to broader opposition against Iran’s clerical establishment, who have governed the country since the Islamic Revolution in 1979.

According to Iranian state media, at least 109 security personnel have been killed during the unrest, and authorities have not confirmed the number of demonstrators who have lost their lives.

But opposition activists based outside the country say the death toll is higher and includes hundreds of protesters.

A nationwide internet blackout has also persisted for more than 72 hours, according to monitoring groups.

The unrest in Iran is unfolding as Trump pursues an assertive foreign policy, having abducted Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, and discussing acquiring Greenland by purchase or force.

Trump was scheduled to meet with senior advisers on Tuesday to discuss options for Iran, a US official told the Reuters news agency. The Wall Street Journal reported that options included military strikes, using secret cyberweapons, widening sanctions and providing online help to antigovernment sources.

Trump said on Sunday that he plans to speak with billionaire Elon Musk about restoring internet in Iran.

“He’s very good at that kind of thing, he’s got a very good company,” Trump told reporters in response to a question about whether he would engage with Musk’s SpaceX company, which offers a satellite internet service called Starlink that has been used in Iran.

The US leader also spoke on his plans for Greenland and Venezuela.

On Greenland, he called for the Danish Arctic territory to “make a deal”, and said “we are talking about acquiring it, not making a short term deal”.

On Venezuela, Trump confirmed he would be meeting with Venezuelan opposition leader, Maria Corina Machado on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei:

The US President [Trump], who judges the entire world with arrogance, should know that tyrants, like the Pharaoh, Nimrod and the Pahlavi Dynasty and the like, were overthrown at the height of their pride.

Last night, saboteurs destroyed buildings in Tehran and other places in their own country to curry favor with the US President.

The US President stated that if the Iranian government takes action against the rioters, he will come and stand on their side. The rioters are pleased about this. If he can, he should govern his own country.

More than a thousand of our compatriots were killed in the Twelve-Day War. The US President claimed that he had given the order, thereby admitting that his hands were stained with the blood of Iranians. And boasts that he is a supporter of the Iranian nation.

Everyone should know that the IRI, which came to power with the blood of hundreds of thousands of honorable people, will not back down before the saboteurs. Whoever you may be, you are foreign mercenaries, the Iranian nation despises you

The Iranian people will not tolerate foreign mercenaries. The Iranian people are today better equipped and armed than before the revolution. Our spiritual weapons are stronger, and our conventional weapons are incomparable to those of that time.

America is committing today, as it has in the past, a misjudgment toward Iran.

Our enemies do not know Iran. In the past, the Americans were defeated due to faulty planning, and today they will be defeated due to their own faulty planning.

If God wills it, the feeling of victory will spread in the hearts of all Iranians.

US weapons, explosive devices found in homes in Iran: Intelligence agency
Iran’s intelligence agency says US arms and explosive equipment have been seized from “cell members” who hid the weapons in several homes in the country.

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi earlier announced authorities have recordings of voices from abroad giving orders to protesters.

Iranian officials have accused the United States and Israel of deploying “foreign agents” to the country to instigate violence so the potential use of military force could be used.

Iran’s supreme leader: Pro-state rallies ‘warning’ to America
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has taken to social media to congratulate the participants of today’s pro-state rallies.

“The great nation of Iran showcased itself, along with its determination and identity, to its enemies,” Khamenei added. “This was a warning to American politicians to stop their deceptions and not rely on treacherous mercenaries.”

Pro-government protests a ‘sign of backing’ the state domestically, internationally
By Tohid Asadi
Reporting from Tehran

Compared to Thursday night, we have been witnessing a tangible, considerable cooling down of anti-state protests.

We also witnessed today in the capital hundreds of thousands of people going out taking to the streets in a pro-state demonstration, and that is the same when it comes to other small and big cities in the country.

Many attended a pro-government demonstration to show that they have been responding to the call for solidarity and unity.

Also, it was a message that could be interpreted from an international perspective, seeing the very fact that over the last few days we have been witnessing the rhetoric from the American President Donald Trump, who has been directing threats against Iran and the possibility of intervention, or a possibility of a more escalated situation down the road.

So the presence of people today in support of the Islamic country shows a sign of backing the state, domestically and internationally.

It also gives, in a sense, what some experts here believe, a sort of green light for further tightened security measures when it comes to protests that at some point turn into violence.

Trump: Any country doing business with Iran faces 25 percent tariffs
Trump has announced immediate tariffs against countries that do business with Iran.

“Effective immediately, any Country doing business with the Islamic Republic of Iran will pay a Tariff of 25% on any and all business being done with the United States of America,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.

“This Order is final and conclusive. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

The president has regularly used tariffs to threaten countries over his foreign policy goals, with an upcoming Supreme Court decision expected to rule on their legality.

China blasts latest US tariff threat over Iran trade
China has criticised the Trump administration’s approach to Iran, warning against unilateral pressure as tensions continue to rise during protests across the country.

In a statement issued in Washington, DC, the Chinese embassy said Beijing “firmly opposes any illicit unilateral sanctions and long-arm jurisdiction”, and will take “all necessary measures” to safeguard its interests.

The comments come as President Donald Trump increases pressure on Tehran, saying countries that engage in trade with Iran will face a 25 percent tariff.

“China’s position against the indiscriminate imposition of tariffs is consistent and clear. Tariff wars and trade wars have no ‌winners, and coercion and pressure cannot solve problems,” an embassy spokesperson said.

Iran’s police chief claims terrorists killed protesters
Ahmad-Reza Radan, Iran’s national police chief, has claimed that security forces showed the “utmost restraint” and blamed protesters’ deaths on terrorists.

In an interview with state news agency SNN, Radan said that security forces were killed by bullets, but they were not allowed to shoot back as they tried to separate terrorists from protesters.

The terrorist” then turned to killing protesters, he claimed, adding that some protesters were killed by knife wounds.

Opposition activist groups outside the country say hundreds of protesters have been killed, while Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch reported the deaths of at least 28 as of January 3. The Iranian government says that more than 100 security service personnel were killed.

Al Jazeera cannot independently verify these figures.

The foreign minister repeated his earlier statements asserting that “Trained terrorist elements infiltrated the crowds of protesters and targeted security forces and demonstrators”.

As for who is to blame, he said that there are “those trying to drag Washington into war in order to serve Israel’s interests”.

US President Donald Trump says he is considering several military options to hit Iran in response to its handling of the protests, while Iran has blamed the US and Israel for fomenting violence and chaos in the country over the past two weeks.

We’ll have more comments from the foreign minister shortly.

Iran says 10 arrested for murder, violence in Tehran, says they are ‘errorists
Tasnim, Iran’s semiofficial news agency, quoting Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence, says that the 10 are part of a team that entered Tehran from a border province, and were responsible for the killings of two members of the Basij, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ volunteer paramilitary force, in the capital’s Heravi Square on January 7.

The Ministry of Intelligence claims in its statement that the arrested people “made important confessions about setting fire to mosques, banks, and people’s properties”.

It is the Iranian government’s position that much of the violence seen during the protests, including the killings of more than 100 security personnel, was perpetrated by terrorists aided by outside actors.

Former Iranian minister dismisses US threats
Sayyed Atollah Mohajerani, who served as Iran’s minister of culture from 1997-2000, says the US’s threats on Iran are nothing new.

“From the beginning of our revolution [until] this time, we have had this experience many times, of America attacking Iran”, he tells Al Jazeera.

He said that the United States, Israel and all their allies “can’t finish the job” of bringing down Iran’s government, saying that it remains intact after all of the regime change rhetoric coming from the West during last year’s 12 Day War with Israel.

He dismissed charges of a brutal crackdown on protesters by the Iranian government, saying that things only turned violent after more than a week of civil unrest, blaming outside influence over armed groups inside Iran for the deaths that have occurred.

Iranian army chief: ‘We are more capable now than during 12-day war with Israel’

The conflict saw devastating attacks on population centres in Iran by Israel, and consistent Iranian return fire damaging several sites within Israeli territory. The US also attacked three [nuclear energy] sites within Iran.

“The preparations made in the past six months after the 12-day imposed war are fully appropriate” to meet the threats being levelled at Iran by Israel and the United States, Hatami said.

Iran’s Tasnim says US closed agency’s English website
The semi-official Iranian news agency Tasnim has said that its English website, under the dot-com domain, has been shut down by US authorities, calling the move “terrorism against awareness”.

“This hostile action was taken after Tasnim News Agency tried to inform the public and observers about the nature of the recent conspiracy against the people with real-time information in recent days,” the agency said in a statement.

In 2023, the US government imposed sanctions on Tasnim, accusing the agency of being controlled by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and contributing to the “regime’s systematic censorship”.

Washington has previously used sanctions to block websites affiliated with Iran and its allies in the region.

Tasnim’s English homepage now displays a message that reads, “There has been a critical error on this website.”

Last night, Tasnim’s dot-com domain was also briefly down, with the agency also blaming the US for that outage.

>I'm hearing that Iran killed 2000 of its own citizens, how true is this?
Zero evidence of that whatsoever.
The estimate a day or two ago from Iranian bodycounts was 109 security force members dead. It far exceeded civilian deaths at that point, and it's unlikely that the 2k number, if it is accurate, is just Iranian civilians. A number of dead civilians were also killed in the "riots," in which a few individuals were straight up just firing guns at security forces and random passersby. The claim that the dead were all killed by the security forces doesn't match up with visual evidence from Iran itself, as a number of "protesters" were caught on camera using guns, flamethrowers, and molotov cocktails to attack police and mosques and hospitals, as well as being filmed beating people to death in the street.

I wouldn't be even slightly shocked if the death toll of "protesters" now is much higher than it was a few days ago, but the reason for that is that the Iranian security forces went over a week basically letting these people run riot in an effort to avoid another high-casualty disaster like in the 2019 riots. Most of the "estimates" being thrown around in western media are coming from outside of the country, and Bari Weiss, fresh off of denying that there was famine in Gaza, is now using CBS (which was handed to her by Ellison) to make up even higher numbers, multiplying the highest current estimates by 10.

None of this accounts for Mossad's provocateurs, either, or operatives within Iran who have been recruited by Mossad. It's not unlikely that even the number of these agents in Iran is in the thousands, whether they have all been executed or not, and the EU and US would, if anything, cry even louder over a pile of corpses which was 100% Mossad. But as is, they make no distinction and there is no reliable number which claims that the entire death toll was created by the actions of the Iranian security forces. It's as accurate as claiming that every single "Israeli" who died during Al-Aqsa Flood was killed by IOF fire; I could claim it, some certainly were, but I would be telling a great big, fat lie if I were to claim to believe that 100% of the casualties were from the Hannibal Directive. Western media and Hasbarist propagandists are happy to tell big lies, though.

… speaking of,
Trump says he is receiving conflicting reports about casualties in Iran
The US president has reiterated his call for antigovernment demonstrators in Iran to “keep protesting”, saying that officials responsible for the crackdown on dissent will “pay a very big price”.

Trump also said he is not sure about how many people have been killed during the protests.

“Now, I hear five different sets of numbers,” Trump said. “I hear numbers. Look, one death is too much, but I hear much lower numbers, and then I hear much higher numbers.”

Western media whitewashes deadly riots in Iran, relying on US govt-funded regime change NGOs
As deadly riots burn Iranian cities, Western media ignores the shocking wave of violence, turning instead to US government-funded NGOs for data. The one-sided portrayal has helped push Trump to the brink of authorizing renewed US attacks.
Western media has ignored a growing trove of video evidence showing terrorist tactics deployed across Iran by protesters described by Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch as “largely peaceful.” Recent videos published both by Iranian state media and anti-government forces reveal public lynchings of unarmed guards, the torching of mosques, arson attacks on municipal buildings, marketplaces and fire stations, and mobs of armed gunmen opening fire in the heart of Iranian cities.

Instead, Western media has focused almost exclusively on violence attributed to the Iranian government. In doing so, they have relied heavily on death counts compiled by Iranian diaspora groups funded by the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), the regime change arm of the US government, and whose boards of directors are filled with committed neoconservatives.

The NED has taken credit for advancing the “Woman, Life, Freedom” protests which filled Iranian cities throughout 2023 – and which also featured gruesome acts of violence ignored by Western media and human rights NGOs. Today, the NED is far from alone among the intelligence-aligned actors seeking to fuel the chaos inside Iran.

The Israeli spying and assassination agency known as Mossad issued a message from its official Farsi language account on Twitter/X urging Iranians to escalate their regime change activities, pledging that it would be supporting them on the ground.

“Go out together into the streets. The time has come,” Mossad instructed Iranians. “We are with you. Not only from a distance and verbally. We are with you in the field.”

Toppling Tehran through terror

Protests began in Iran in early January 2026 when merchants took to the streets to demonstrate against rising inflation rates triggered by Western sanctions. Iran’s government responded sympathetically to the bazaar protests, providing them with police protection. However, these demonstrations quickly dissolved, as an amorphous mass of anti-government elements seized the moment to launch a violent insurrection encouraged by governments from Israel to the US – and by self-proclaimed “Crown Prince” Reza Pahlavi, who has branded government workers and state media outlets as “legitimate targets.”

On January 9, the city of Mashhad became the scene of some of the most intense riots, as anti-government forces torched fire stations, burning fire fighters alive, while setting buses alight, attacking city workers, vandalizing Metro stations and causing over $18 million in damage, according to local municipal authorities.

In Kermanshah, where anti-government rioters shot and killed 3 year-old Melina Asadi, groups of militants were filmed firing automatic weapons at police. In cities from Hamedan to Lorestan, rioters have filmed themselves beating unarmed security guards to death for attempting to impede their rampages.

Footage has emerged from the central Iranian city of rioters attacking a public bus and setting it aflame on January 10.

In Tehran, meanwhile, mobs of rioters have attacked the historic Abazar Mosque, burning its interior, while others conducted arson attacks and burned copies of the Quran inside the Grand Mosque of Sarableh and the Muhammad ibn Musa al-Kadhim shrine in Kuzestan.

Rioters have set fire to a large municipal building in the heart of the city of Karaj, while burning the marketplace to the ground in central Rasht. In Borujen, anti-government hooligans reportedly torched a historic library filled with ancient texts during a night of looting and destruction.

None of these incidents have elicited any reaction from Western media outlets or governments, even after the Iranian foreign ministry obliged ambassadors from Britain, France, Germany, and Italy to view footage of the violence carried out by rioters firsthand.

According to the Iranian government, over 100 police and security officers have been killed during the unrest. However, a pair of Iranian NGOs based in Washington and funded by the US government has set the death toll on the government’s side at a much lower figure. These groups have become the go-to source for Western media on the protests.

Regime change lobbyists set the agenda

In assessing the death toll in Iran, outlets throughout the US and Europe have depended on two NGOs based in Washington and funded by the US government’s National Endowment for Democracy: the Abdorrahman Boroumand Center for Human Rights in Iran and Human Rights Activists in Iran.

A 2024 press release by the NED explicitly described the Abdorrahman Boroumand Center for Human Rights in Iran as “a partner of the National Endowment for Democracy (NED).”

Elsewhere, a 2021 statement from Human Rights Activists in Iran states that the group “expanded its network and decided to start receiving financial aid from the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), a non-governmental and non-profit organization based in the United States” after it was accused by the Iran government of ties to the CIA in 2010.

The NED was created under the watch of the Reagan administration’s CIA director, William Casey, to enable the government to continue meddling abroad despite widespread distrust in US intelligence services. One of its founders, Allen Weinstein, famously admitted, “a lot of what we do today was done covertly 25 years ago by the CIA.”

While failing to acknowledge the NGO’s funding from NED, The Washington Post and ABC News have cited the Abdorrahman Boroumand Center prominently in their coverage of Iranian protests. Seated on the Center’s board of directors is Francis Fukuyama, the ideologue who signed the Project for a New American Century’s founding letter – perhaps the most important manifesto of modern neoconservatism.

Figures from the suggestively-named “Human Rights Activists in Iran” have circulated even more widely, with the NGO’s recent estimated death toll of 544 people cited by dozens of US and Israeli mainstream outlets across the political spectrum, as well as by Dropsite. The “shadow CIA” intelligence firm Stratfor has also cited the NGO in an article entitled, “Protests in Iran Provide a Window for U.S. and/or Israeli Intervention.”

With the precise number of casualties from the protests still difficult to ascertain, a motley crew of online influencers has filled the information void with overblown, dubiously sourced claims. These propagandists include the noted Jewish supremacist Trump confidant Laura Loomer, who crowed that “the death count of Iranian protesters killed by the Islamic regimes’ forces is now over 6,000!,” citing a supposed “source in the Intel community.”

The digital casino Polymarket also inflated the death toll, claiming without sourcing that “over 10,000” people had been killed by “Iranian Forces [using] Automatic Rifles on Protesters,” and falsely stating that Iran had “lost nearly all control” of three of its five largest cities.

In recent months, Polymarket has become notorious for allowing insiders to abuse advanced knowledge of political developments – such as the recent US military assault on Caracas and their abduction of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro – to rake in hundreds of thousands of dollars. The self-described “world’s largest prediction market” was established with a major investment from AI warlord Peter Thiel, and now features Donald Trump Jr. as an advisor.

By spreading clearly inflated death tolls, regime change activists and Trump cronies are apparently goading the notoriously gullible president into launching another military assault on Tehran.

In a January 7 assessment of the protests, Stratfor described the chaos in Iran’s streets as an enticing opportunity for war, writing, “While unlikely to collapse the regime, the ongoing unrest could open the door for Israel or the United States to conduct covert or overt activities aimed at further destabilizing the Iranian government, either indirectly by encouraging the protests or directly via military action against Iranian leaders.”

However, the CIA contractor acknowledged that “renewed military strikes on Iran would also likely put an end to the current protest movement by leading instead to a wider display of Iranian nationalism and unity, a pattern observed after U.S. and Israeli strikes in 2025.”

‘Locked and loaded’

Iran’s latest round of anti-government protests has predictably received hearty endorsements from a host of Western leaders, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump.

“If Iran shots [sic] and violently kills peaceful protesters, which is their custom, the United States of America will come to their rescue,” Trump announced. “We are locked and loaded and ready to go.”

Days later, Trump threatened Iran again: “You better not start shooting [protesters] – because we’ll start shooting too.” Then, on Jan. 12, Trump decreed that any country caught trading with Iran would face a 25% tariff on goods exchanged with the US.

Now, Trump is reportedly mulling an attack, considering options ranging from cyber-warfare to airstrikes. However, the pace of the anti-government protests appears to have slowed, with relative calm returning to major cities.

As the dust clears, millions of Iranian citizens are pouring into the streets of cities from Tehran to Mashhad to express their indignation at the riots, to denounce the foreign elements that helped spur the regime change rampage, and to proclaim their support for the government. But in newsrooms across the West, giving voice to these masses of Iranian demonstrators seems forbidden.

Al Udeid is the Middle East’s largest US base housing about 10,000 American troops.

“It’s a posture change and not an ordered evacuation,” one of the diplomats told Reuters, adding he’s not aware of any specific reason for the move.

Qatar’s Foreign Ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Ex-defence minister says Israel should influence Iran protests with ‘invisible hand’
Israel’s former defence minister, Yoav Gallant, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for alleged war crimes in Gaza, has said that Israel should be “active when necessary” and employ an “invisible hand” amid the protests in Iran.

“At this time, when what matters is the action of the masses on the ground, we need to stay behind and direct things with an invisible hand,” Gallant said in an interview published by Israeli Army Radio on Tuesday.

“The regime in Iran needs to fall, and we need to exercise strategic patience, but to be active when necessary,” he said.

Iran to hold funerals for security forces killed in demonstrations
Iranian state TV says officials will hold a mass funeral for the “martyrs and security defenders” who died during the nationwide protests.

The semi-official Tasnim reported the funeral will take place at Tehran University on Wednesday and will be the first among many state funerals held for security forces in the coming days.

Iran’s state media have reported more than 100 security personnel have been killed in the violence since the demonstrations began more than two weeks ago. Authorities have blamed “foreign elements” for instigating attacks on officers.

Iran’s top judge says assailants must face immediate justice
Chief Justice Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei says those “who beheaded people or burned people in the streets” should be “tried and punished as soon as possible”.

Mohseni-Ejei said last week that there will be no leniency for those who help “the enemy” against the Iranian government.

“If anyone comes into the streets for riots or to create insecurity or supports them, then no excuse remains for them. The matter has become very clear and transparent. They are now operating in line with the enemies of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” he said.

Officials have accused the US and Israel of ordering and arming “agents” to stoke violence at demonstrations and target security forces and protesters.

Situation in Iran calmer but fear of escalation remains
By Tohid Asadi
Reporting from Tehran, Iran

The situation now is quite calm compared with the previous days. From Thursday night onwards, when we saw the unrest flare up into violence, we are now witnessing less and less.

Meanwhile, tens of thousands of Iranians showed up at a mass rally in support of the government on Monday.

The leadership is interpreting this as a sort of green light to tighten security measures against what it calls “rioters” or “terrorist groups”. State television has shown images of unidentified people carrying guns and attacking civilians.

The situation appears relatively calm at the moment, but following comments from President Trump, there is confusion and fear. If you speak to people here, there is an air of frustration and fear of further escalation.

Iran protests subside: ‘We haven’t seen any more riots’
Foad Izadi, a professor at the University of Tehran, says demonstrations in Iran appear to be under control with no major unrest in recent days.

“I haven’t seen any protest in the last 48 to 72 hours,” Izadi told Al Jazeera when asked about the situation on the ground. “We haven’t seen any more riots.”

Addressing ongoing internet restrictions, Izadi linked the measures to security concerns and referred to the June 2025 war with Israel.

“Israeli Mossad agents used Iran’s infrastructure to communicate,” and operated a command-and-control centre that was later discovered during the attack, he noted.

Izadi said a number of “rioters were shooting at police and shooting at shopkeepers” who refused to close their businesses during the protests.

“We have rioters killing shopkeepers,” he said.

Iran condemns ‘inhumane’ US sanctions as economy tanks
Iran’s Foreign Ministry has condemned new US sanctions, describing them as illegal and motivated by what it called “deep-rooted hatred” towards the country.

The measures are “inhumane” and violate the principles of the UN Charter and international law, the ministry said in a statement.

Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei warned that the sanctions will have serious consequences beyond Iran because unilateral US measures undermine the global trading system.

The UN and its institutions have a responsibility to uphold international law and prevent what he described as coercive economic actions.

Trump has said countries engaging in trade with Iran face a 25 percent tariff on any business done with the United States.

US sends aircraft carrier to Middle East from South China Sea: Report
The US has no aircraft carriers positioned in the Middle East or Europe, as a result of the Trump administration’s pressure campaign against Venezuela, according to US media reports.

However, the Pentagon has ordered the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier and its strike group to head to the Middle East from the South China Sea, US cable news network NewsNation reported.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump’s decision to send the USS Gerald R Ford carrier group from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean in October meant there were currently no aircraft carrier strike groups in position to play a role in any potential strikes on Iran, unlike during previous flare-ups with Tehran.

The outlet reported, quoting a US Navy official, that the US currently has 12 warships in the Caribbean compared with six in the Middle East.

The UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office advised against “all but essential travel to Israel” in the current climate.

The warnings come days after the speaker of Iran’s parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, warned that Israel, along with US bases and ships, would be a “legitimate target” if Iran were attacked.

The US, UK, India, Italy, Spain, Poland and Australia are among countries that have advised their citizens to leave Iran amid the tensions.

So what's the deal with the MEK? Today they seem to be an obvious tool of Israeli-US manipulation, but their history is interesting. They might be thought of as Liberation Theologians for Shia Islam. It's sometimes asserted that they're some kind of "Marxist" organization, but apparently they have always tried to dodge that label because "Marxist" is associated with atheism in Iran. However they have also never referred to themselves as socialists or communists.

Apparently they sided with Iraq during the Iran-Iraq war, allowing themselves to be armed by Iraq for a military incursion near the end of the war. This seems likely to have been the ultimate discrediting moment for the organization within Iran and an inflection point in their transition towards being a puppet opposition group for foreign machinations.
