From AJ:
One ‍person is dead after an ICE officer on a large-scale immigration operation in Minneapolis shot and killed a woman who allegedly “weaponized” her vehicle.

The Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer shot the woman in her vehicle on Wednesday in a residential neighbourhood in Minneapolis, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement.

Mayor Jacob Frey alleged the officer “recklessly” shot her, adding immigration agents are “causing chaos in our city”.

“They’re ripping families apart. They’re sowing chaos on our streets and in this case quite literally killing people,” Frey said at a news conference.

“They are already trying to spin this as an action of self defence. Having seen the video myself, I wanna tell everybody directly, that is bulls**t,” the mayor said.

The shooting marks a dramatic escalation of the latest in a series of immigration enforcement operations in major American cities under the Trump administration.

The Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St Paul have been on edge since DHS announced on Tuesday it launched the operation with 2,000 agents and officers expected to participate in the crackdown tied in part to allegations of fraud involving Somali residents.

A large throng of protesters gathered at the scene after Wednesday’s shooting and vented their anger at the local and federal officers there.

“Shame! Shame! Shame!” and “ICE out of Minnesota!”, they loudly chanted from behind the police tape.

The area where the shooting occurred is a modest neighborhood south of downtown Minneapolis, just a few blocks from some of the oldest immigrant markets in the area and 1.6km (1 mile) from where George Floyd was killed by police in 2020.

Al Jazeera’s John Hendren reported Minnesota Public Radio quoted a witness saying: “ICE agents were telling the driver, a woman, to get out of here. She was trying to turn around and the ICE agent was in front of the car and he pulled out a gun.”

The witness said “he [an agent] reached across the hood of the car and shot her in the face, like three or four times”. The woman’s vehicle then accelerated and travelled about 30 metres (100 feet) before crashing into a utility pole.

Apparently since interfering with ICE hasn't worked out and ICE is still going about it's job with no sign of stopping, people are now going around harassing random citizens.

US immigration thugs escalate terror campaign, as sentiment for Minneapolis general strike grows among workers

On Sunday night it was revealed that a man living in Minneapolis who was kidnapped by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) thugs on January 6 died on January 14 at the Camp East Montana concentration camp in El Paso, Texas. Multiple outlets reported that Victor Manuel Diaz, 36, from Nicaragua, was found unconscious and unresponsive at the facility last week.

Diaz is at least the third person to die at the sprawling tent camp in south Texas in the last month and a half. On January 3, ICE announced that Geraldo Lunas Campos died at the same facility after “staff observed him in distress.” This purposefully vague statement was aimed at concealing the fact that Lunas Campos died after he was attacked by guards at the facility.

Last week, the Washington Post reported that the El Paso County Office of the Medical Examiner was likely to classify Lunas Campos’ death as a “homicide,” with the preliminary cause of death being “asphyxia due to neck and chest compression.” That is, Lunas Campos did not receive enough oxygen because severe pressure was being applied to his neck and chest.

Santos Jesus Flores, a witness to the incident, told the paper he saw at least five guards fighting with Lunas Campos after the latter refused to enter a segregated cell without his medication. Flores told the Post he saw guards choking the father of three and that he heard Lunas Campos scream, “No puedo respirar,” Spanish for “I can’t breathe,” before falling unconscious.

“He said, ‘I cannot breathe, I cannot breathe.’ After that, we don’t hear his voice anymore and that’s it,” Flores said.

In the first 19 days of 2026, at least six people have already died while in the custody of ICE. These deaths are unfolding amid the ongoing federal occupation of Minnesota, where roughly 3,000 Department of Homeland Security (DHS) agents have been deployed to carry out mass raids and attacks on the working class as part of the Trump administration’s drive to establish a presidential dictatorship.

In addition to deaths in ICE custody, at least two people have been shot by immigration thugs in Minnesota since the start of the year, including the murder of Renée Nicole Good on January 7 by DHS agent Jonathan Ross. As social opposition mounts, Trump has repeatedly threatened to invoke the Insurrection Act and deploy an additional 1,500 active-duty soldiers from the 11th Airborne Division to the state.

The federal government’s attacks on the working class in Minnesota have provoked mass outrage throughout the state, and especially in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis–St. Paul. In the face of the Democratic Party’s acquiescence to the Trump administration’s attacks, more workers are coming to the conclusion that the only way to counteract these assaults is through mass strike action by the working class.

Outside the Hennepin County Medical Center, World Socialist Web Site reporters spoke with residents and healthcare workers about the ongoing federal occupation and their views on a general strike.

A healthcare worker told the WSWS, “Yeah, I don’t appreciate how they’re causing kids to be scared in their own city, kids that were even born in America. And I don’t like that there’s ICE agents in our hospital. And I appreciate people that are fighting back.

“I think we have to depend on ourselves because our politicians aren’t the ones doing it,” the worker continued. “So I’m glad that there’s enough normal citizens that are standing up and marching and fighting back.”

In response to calls from Democrats, including Governor Walz, that the best way to fight the federal occupation is through the “courts and ballot box,” the healthcare worker said, “We can’t trust that [Trump] will follow the results of the election. We saw what happened in 2020.”

Asked whether he would support a general strike, he responded, “I’m pro [general strike] … anyone that is able to safely strike should absolutely strike.”

A local resident, Reginald, told WSWS reporters, “It’s all total chaos, man. Understand this here, we all, black, white, everybody, Indian, Native, Chinese, I don’t care who you are, we all need to get together, man.”

He added, “I’m 65. I mean, I was back there with the Kennedys, Kings, Malcolm, everybody. This is the worst that I ever seen it.

“It’s about to be war time anytime soon,” he said. “We got to get up, all of us, white, black, everybody.”

Asked what he thought about the working class taking matters into its own hands through the methods of class struggle, specifically a general strike, Reginald replied, “The working class, we need to do that. If we don’t get together and do it, who is going to do it for us? We’ve got to do it for ourselves. The working class.”

He concluded, “They got money to spend on war instead of on us. A lot of people out here dying. There’s a lot of people out there homeless, trying to do the best that we can even in this situation.”

Under conditions of continuing resistance to ICE agents in the communities, high school walkouts and other signs of popular opposition, particularly after the murder of Renée Nicole Good, a coalition of unions and community groups have called for a “Day of Truth and Freedom” on Friday, January 23, which would include, “No work, no school, no shopping.”

While there is widespread support in the working class for a general strike, the heads of the largest unions in the Twin Cities made clear at a press conference Monday that they had no intention of leading a strike in any meaningful sense of the word.

Chelsie Glaubitz Gabiou, president of the Minneapolis Regional Labor Federation AFL-CIO, left no doubt that the union apparaus is seeking to direct opposition behind the same capitalist politicians who have done nothing to stop the Trump administration from terrorizing and murdering residents. “We think that on January 23rd, if we all stand together in solidarity and mass mobilization, we can get the attention of the folks who need to step in and make this chaos stop.”

The union bureaucracy is demanding that workers uphold collective bargaining agreements under conditions in which the US president openly flouts the law, occupies an American city, and oversees the kidnapping and murder of residents regardless of citizenship status.

The defense of democratic rights cannot be subordinated to contract technicalities negotiated by the union apparatus to suppress the class struggle. Workers must take the conduct of the struggle into their own hands through the establishment of rank-and-file committees, organized independently of the trade apparatus and the capitalist parties.

These committees, organized in every workplace, should fight for the broadest mobilization of the working class in a real general strike to demand:

The immediate arrest and prosecution of all those responsible for the murder of Renée Nicole Good
The withdrawal of all ICE, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) forces from Minneapolis and every other city
The abolition of these agencies that terrorize immigrant workers and their families
'''The immediate release of all detainees held in ICE custody and an end to all raids, renditions and deportations
Full legal rights and protections for all immigrant workers and their families.'''
The withdrawal of all troops from Venezuela and the Caribbean and the dismantling of the US war machine
Repudiation of all support for Israel and solidarity with the Palestinian people facing an ongoing genocide.

SOLIDARITY WITH MINNESOTA!

On Friday, January 23, the people of Minnesota will take bold action in response to the ICE terror that has been unleashed by the Trump administration against Somali and other immigrant communities.

I'm not sure a strike is going to be successful or do anything. Given that most of the protests have come from old white liberal women and a bunch of lumpenprols, what possible jobs do these people have that would bring the state to it's knees if they stopped working? And besides, even if it does work, do you think the FEDERAL government will care if Minnesotans tank their STATE economy? Sounds like retardation to me. Good luck though.

>unions and faith leaders have put forward a historic call for a statewide economic shutdown

Many businesses have also opted to shut down on the 23rd as part of the campaign. There was also an interview from either night 14 (>>493869) or night 15 (>>493896) in which a protester relates how he scheduled the day off at his job and got easy approval for it. I think it was the dude who's being interviewed at 49 minutes on night 15, but I'm not going back and watching the whole things again - I had them on when they were live.

As an addendum, yesterday, a large number of schools and universities around the country also had walkouts - in fact, there were some massive walkouts of 1,000+ students right in this area, and we're nowhere near MN.

Minneapolis AFL-CIO Calls for Action on Friday as General Strike Movement Spreads to Other Cities

This weekend, the Minneapolis Regional Labor Federation endorsed a measure encouraging union members to participate in a January 23: Day of Truth and Freedom. Many labor groups, including some unions, had called on union members not to work, buy anything, or show up to school on January 23rd.

In response to ICE’s continued operations and raids in Minneapolis on Friday, January 23.

The endorsement comes as Trump announced that the National Guard could deploy to the Twin Cities to quell protests. Trump has since alerted 1,500 soldiers of the 11th Airborne Division and advised them that they may deploy to Minnesota.

Minneapolis has quickly become the fiercest battleground for activists fighting ICE after an ICE agent murdered Renee Good, a legal observer monitoring ICE.

Now, if labor groups get behind a call for a general strike, things could intensify the fight and inspire unions in other cities to go on strike against ICE's continued operations. Already, several other regional labor federations have endorsed the action, and other unions nationwide could be further inspired to take action.

“The Minneapolis Regional Labor Federation, AFL-CIO along with regional bodies throughout the state, including the Saint Paul Regional Labor Federation, the West Area Labor Council, the North East Area Labor Council and the East Central Labor Council, have joined in solidarity to endorse a powerful unified statewide action on January 23: Day of Truth and Freedom,” said the unions in a statement. “The Minnesota labor movement is united against the violent ICE occupation of our beloved cities that has directly impacted union members, our workplaces and our families.”

Chelsie Glaubitz Gabiou, President of the Minneapolis Regional Labor Federation, AFL-CIO, said that the action is necessary to get business leaders to break their silence about immigration.

“Parents are being forced to stay home, students held out of school, fearing for their lives, all while the employer class remains silent, “ said Gabiou. “Our labor federations are encouraging everyone to participate on January 23rd. It’s time for every single Minnesotan who loves this state and the notion of truth and freedom to raise their voices and deepen their solidarity for our neighbors and coworkers living under this federal occupation.”

Already the strike action has begun to spread to some other cities around the United States with solidarity actions being planned in dozens of cities.

US federal agents shoot and kill another person in Minneapolis
Minneapolis police chief Brian O’Hara says a 37-year-old man died in hospital after suffering multiple gunshot wounds.

United States federal agents have shot and killed another person in Minneapolis amid an immigration crackdown, authorities said, spurring protests and fresh calls for President Donald Trump to immediately pull heavily armed officers out of the city.

At a news conference on Saturday, Minneapolis police chief Brian O’Hara said a 37-year-old man, whose identity has not yet been released, died in hospital after suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

The man was a Minneapolis resident and a US citizen, O’Hara told reporters.

“Our demand today is for those federal agencies that are operating in our city to do so with the same discipline, humanity and integrity that effective law enforcement in this country demands,” he said.

The deadly shooting took place amid a weeks-long deployment of US immigration enforcement and other federal agents to Minneapolis, where they have been carrying out raids as part of Trump’s anti-immigration push.

Video footage of the shooting, which has been circulating on social media, showed a group of US law enforcement officers wrestling a man to the ground before several gunshots were heard.

The Department of Homeland Security said a US Border Patrol agent shot and killed a person who had a handgun and resisted attempts to be disarmed.

Bellingcat, a group of researchers and journalists who conduct open-source investigations, said footage of the shooting “appears to show that a gun was taken from the man before the first shot was fired”.

“Two different agents are visibly firing their guns, with at least 10 shots being heard in total. Most of them are fired after a brief delay, when the man is already lying motionless on the ground,” the group said.

Another video of the incident, taken from a different angle, also showed the man holding a cell phone in his hand before he was pepper-sprayed, tackled and shot multiple times.

O’Hara said police believed the person was “a lawful gun owner with a permit to carry”.

‘How many more residents need to die?’
The shooting comes just weeks after an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer shot and killed a Minneapolis woman named Renee Nicole Good in her car earlier this month.

Federal agents also shot a Venezuelan man in a separate incident last week in the city.

Trump and senior members of his administration have justified the deployment of ICE and other federal officers to Minneapolis as part of the US president’s pledge to carry out the largest deportation operation in the country’s history.

But residents and elected officials have condemned the Trump administration for its anti-immigration policies and said the presence of heavily armed officers on their streets is not making people safer.

Speaking during Saturday’s news conference alongside the city’s police chief, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey denounced the Trump administration for its continued crackdown.

“I just saw a video of more than six masked agents pummelling one of our constituents and shooting him to death,” Frey said. “How many more residents, how many more Americans, need to die or get badly hurt for this operation to end?

“How many more lives need to be lost before this administration realises that a political and partisan narrative is not as important as American values? How many times must local and national leaders … plead with you, Donald Trump, to end this operation and recognise that this is not creating safety in our city?”

Protesters have gathered near the scene of the shooting, where footage throughout the day showed clouds of tear gas in the air amid a heavy security presence.

Reporting from Washington, DC, Al Jazeera’s Heidi Zhou-Castro said the incident has further ignited tensions in Minneapolis, which she described as a “tinderbox”.

“It is very much a head-to-head between Trump and his federal authorities, and local and state authorities in Minnesota,” Zhou-Castro explained, noting that the fight has been brewing since mass protests broke out in Minneapolis after the police killing of George Floyd in 2020.

On Friday, thousands of people marched through the streets of Minneapolis to denounce ICE and the Trump administration’s anti-immigration crackdown. Hundreds of local businesses also shut their doors as part of a general strike.

At the largest immigration detention site in the country, officers beat up Samuel, a detained teenager who uses a pseudonym, so badly, he had to go to the hospital. His right front tooth broke, and he said one officer “grabbed my testicles and firmly crushed them,” while another “forced his fingers deep into my ears.” He added that weeks after the beating, damage to his left ear was so severe that he now has trouble hearing.

Extreme and unlawful use of force is also prominent at Fort Bliss. Several detained individuals have described violent assaults by officers, including sexual abuse. Ignacio, Samuel, and others report officers crushing their testicles during beatings — a tactic used while people were already restrained or after they refused coerced removal to Mexico. Abel, Benjamin, and Eduardo also reported being slammed, stomped on, or beaten when they expressed fear of being sent to Mexico or when they simply requested their medication. These are not isolated incidents; they reflect a pattern of brutality that violates even ICE’s minimal standards.
