Get over yourself. The only decent old FF game was VI and only because I love the art and Kefka. The gameplay was unbelievably shallow.
>>

 No.8092

I'm an Eastern Euro who has never seen a console or a controler IRL, so I have to ask, are the FF games actually great, or is it one big circlejerk by and for western Nintendo fanboys who want to nostalgiajerk over their okayish childhood games like ot is with Ocharina of Time or Banzo Kazooey?
>>

 No.8146

Appreciate the concept, iffy on the execution, big respect for actually doing it.
>>

For a big part: yes. Though, the games that are respected are genuinely good, even if not nearly as good as fans make it out to be ( whenever is that not the case?)
Final Fantasy 6, 7 and 9 I can recommend to anyone. 9 being the best of them, despite the hilariously blunt ending. Final Fantasy 1 was a milestone, but unplayable by todays standards in its raw form, don't even bother.

Made by our favorite game developers, Kremlingames, the game will have you take on managing your own fictional country (called "Republic") right after the aftermath of the collapse of the Soviet Union between 1992 and 2004. Diverting from the previous games' path, you will play not as the country's president, but as the leader of a party of your choosing. This means that you will be able to play as the opposition for the first time in a Kremlingames product.

You will get to shape the personality, sex and background of your party's leader as well as to be able to choose between seven different parties:
>the liberals
>the conservatives
>the social-democrats
>the "socialists"
>the communists
>the nazbols
>the fascists
Each of these parties are then divided between three different factions vying for power. You can go for a reformist or revolutionary path as the communists.
There are many other features, such as interactions with foreign powers, regional separatism, international integration, etc… I'm pretty intrigued by it tbh, I hope it won't be as hard and save-scummy as their previous games. It seems to be a better version of what Suzerain aims to be.

The game will release on tuesday the 23th.

Idk about the viability thing. I picked Nazbols, went down the most pro-independence choices during the pregame (it seems to really boost your popularity), easily won the first elections and then grabbed agronomy and industry ministers, which (especially the agronomy) helped me easily keep planners in charge. Kept winning bigger and bigger up to 2004 after which I got bored and didn't pick it up since. I guess I should try to end the run, but really can't be asked since gameplay is so dogshit.

Worth noting that modern videogames are huge mass market commodities that require huge funding, unlike in the SNES era (or even the PS2 era to an extent), so there are lots more creative limitations nowadays and arguably ideological controls

Sup comrades. Who here is a fan of the Metal Gear games? It's got strong anti-imperialist and anti-war themes and one of the games (Peace Walker) pretty much has you playing as Che Guevara. Which game do you like best? My favourite would be MGS3.

the first three MGS game are DIMES, just perfect video games.

I'm currently trying to play the old MSX games, MG1 was shit honestly but I hear MG2 is better. Both old came have an awesome super late cold war vibe though as they were made RIGHT before the fall of USSR. The cover art for MG2 is so awesome I even got a poster of it.

Redpill me on MGS4.
I sat through that awful shit and I cannot believe it has zero subtext or preachy Kojimmy shit, because it feels like a mush of fanservice and pandering that attempts to wrap up every single plot point in the most contrived and absurd way possible (and then shits up that in the ending too).

MGS4 is an odd beast. It has both the highest highs and lowest lows of the series. Piloting Rex, the final fight, most of the other boss fights, and chapter 1 and 2 are amazing.

But I never understood why people say it is fanservice. It is fandiservice if anything. Snake being an old man for no good reason instead of in his prime, Meryl marrying mr poopy pants, dumb shit like Mount Snakemoore.

MGS4 is weird.

I should add that I only listened to other music while playing when I felt bored of the game's soundtrack. It really depends on how you're feeling in that moment.

>>7920
>If you're playing something like HOI import all the old HOI soundtracks
Sometimes this applies to other series as well, if you like an earlier game's soundtrack more than the music in the one you're playing (or even if they're different series but you feel that the other game's music fits).
>>

The music in the game obviously. Although admittedly when I get really, really good at certain games I tend to eventually turn the music off so I can focus on sound effects as audio cues.

The game is free on Epic right now, I already had it on Steam but it's well worth the purchase (for free). It's a Cold War RTS, pretty gritty, if didn't know. If we get enough players, maybe we can get our own little league going!

Red Orchestra 2 is pretty based.

I'm a big fan of the Combat Mission games which is a more "grognard" series of tactical RTS games. Very difficult and paced. I've played them for years. The latest in the series taking place during a Cold War gone hot comes out next month. See embed.

The thing I also love about Combat Mission is that they use a turn-based system where both sides (either you against another human player or against a computer) issue orders simultaneously, and there is a lot of fine control over orders, movements, where to fire, etc. then you hit "play" and the turns execute over 1 minute, but you can't change orders during that minute as it plays out in real time. Each "turn" is 1 minute. This gives it a kind of dynamism, where you don't know how it'll totally play out – at the same time, your little green army men have their own AI and will take cover if they're fired on, or will return fire on their own, or open fire on their own if they see a target in the open and you've given them permission to engage. That makes it feel more like you're a "commander" in a sense of a dynamic battle that you don't totally control.

Playing around with mods for Shock Force 2 as the Syrian Arab Army. Watch my guys trigger an IED and then the lead T-72 get blown away by an ATGM.

I feel as if despite the fact that speedrunning is so popular nowadays, it seems like at the end of the day, there really isn't much skills that you really gained from it, nor did you really artistically influence the game in a way that minecraft building creators, or whatever would have achieved. I mean there is playing a whole variety of games, or just trying to see as much of a game that you can enjoy for yourself but it seems to me that speedrunning feels kind of hollow in a lot of ways to me. It's just doing the same shit over and over again for little benefit. At least with exercise, you gain muscular strength, but what is the light at the end of the tunnel for speedrunners?

>>

I used to find speedrunning to be pointless too but eventually made peace with it after accepting that it's one of many forms of valid challenges. Exploiting glitch to squeeze out few milliseconds out of PB may seem autistic but it requires you to truly understand game engine's nuance and game mechanics to the point of art.
>>

 No.7931

its basically the joy you get out of any kind of ability to understand a system and bend it towards your ends, just with the artificial ends to bend the system in such a way as to finish the game as quickly as possible. some of it comes down to skill, some of it down to basically luck, but its (usually) just for good fun anyways

mastering movement (which is core to speedrunning) is very fun in many games.
example, half life. Half life speedrun is both a nostalgia blast and an impressive display of skill, and strafe/gauss jumping is FUN
TAS are pretty fun to watch too, breaking a game very core to achieve "a perfect run" has some unexpected depth (especially the tas that fuck with game memory are crazy cool to me)
I will admit, I dont see the appeal in a game like goldeneye. but whatever. everything is ultimately meaningless, if you have fun doing it (or streaming it), who cares

For all those oldie goldies, cartridges, CDs, and games that you remember but have since been lost to planned redundancy, discontinued product lines, sites being shut down, just generally losing it, or you only caught a glimpse of it before it was swept away and now are seeking it again. AKA you want a game found that you can no longer get or one you kinda only vaguely remember and need help finding the SAUCE.

I'll start it off: Before the 2012 remake there was a fan made version of XCOM; it had mid 2000s 3D top down graphics, was more grounded in irl military equipment in terms of looks and effects, entirely free, and was rebranded as something else which I have entirely forgotten and why I need help finding it since these days searching for "Xcom fan game" usually nets all the spinoffs since the 2012 remake(which is kinda garbo in my opinion) or Xenonauts. So does anyone know which game I'm talking about? I remember it was very oversaturated with the colour green if that's any help at all.
